The Things That Make You Go Hmmm...

To appease Elka, who thought I should include a link to this song, from which I got the title :)...

Okay, I promised Elka I'd be posting. And I started writing, but it wasn't coming out well. So, I'm changing gears. Here are random thoughts I've had recently:

1. Though this is not where I thought I'd be in my life at this time, I do recognize something... It is because of how things turned out that I have a very special relationship with my mom and my dad individually. And it means a lot to me now, as I ponder it and realize it. But I also recognize that one day, it will mean even more to me that I've been able to know my parents the way I know them. I feel like I have a very special and unique relationship with each of them. And so I am thankful for the opportunity. I will always be able to remember driving across the country with my dad and going Panama with him. I will always remember working alongside my mom at the funeral home and being embarassed more than just a little every time she tells someone my name is Hebrew and means "aura around the sun" (not because I dislike my name... but because this draws more attention to me, and I'm not a spotlight-lover) or introduces me as "her librarian." Also, I've had an opportunity to know my nieces and nephews in ways I wouldn't have been able to otherwise. I get to be a big part of their lives, and I get to have them be a big part of mine.

2. Right now I feel like I have too many irons in the fire, so to speak. Really different and strange options sit in front of me, and I am not even sure what to do with them! This will take much pondering and prayer.

And so this was pretty much a pointless post, but thought I'd tell you a couple of the things I think about these days :). Hope you're happy, Elka :).

Where Have All the [Hours] Gone?

Oh good grief. So, coming up with song title posts as corny as that one are what I do as I drift off to sleep at night. Hahahaha... Either that's really funny, or I'm so tired that I just think it's funny. Because I can't stop laughing about my ridiculous song title post. Either way, it's a tip of the hat to my parents' generation :).

I'm still tired. And I'll give you a run down of my week so you know why. Because I have been intending to post several blogs this week. I've been particularly speculative and even have a post-series in my head. Who knows when it'll get written, if ever. I have simply run out of time. And have felt exhausted! I guess that's what 5 (almost 6) months of unemployment will do to you when you actually have a job again; even if it is a part-time job.

So yeah, Monday was my first day of work! Woohoo! I didn't get into the filing room until Tuesday, and boy oh boy... I can see this will be fun. Let's just say lots of different people from at least the past 60 years have had very interesting and very different ways of filing. I'm making notes as I go along filing stuff that should have been filed years ago about ways to improve the filing system. And I will also say that my feet have been very sore! I'm on them the entire time I work, since I'm going back and forth amongst all the files and trying to hunt down the locations for contracts, etc. My mom ended up being in Seattle from Wednesday to Thursday (including overnight) for a managers' meeting, and that's when life got interesting and sleep became scarce. I'd gotten up early to go into work by 9:30 and then I took some time to take my grandmother to a hair appointment that wasn't supposed to last as long as it did. And then I spent over an hour in Rite Aid waiting for my grandmother. And then I thought I had a thing for Relief Society, but then found out it had been cancelled. So I hung out with Christina for a bit. And when I got home, I found out my grandfather was worried about some health issues, and we called the nurse hotline. She was concerned about what we were describing, so we went to the hospital. We left the hospital at 3 in the morning with little to no explanation about what was causing my grandpa's discomfort. The good news is that he is feeling better. And though my grandmother very hopefully suggested we go to eat at the Pancake House (at 3:10 in the morning), I politely declined. I was soooooo tired. And I had to work the next morning. So I got 5 hours of sleep that night/morning, and then went to work. And thanks so much to Ben for taking Grandpa to get his prescriptions! I will say I am so thankful for all of my family and how they help me when I need them. So thank you Ben! I love you! Anyway, I digress... I had a meeting Thursday night, but that ended up cancelled too, but I didn't find out until I showed up at the girl's house (I hadn't had a chance to check my email that day). And then my mom got home and I wanted to spend time with her, so I was up until after midnight once again. So, that's my story of 5 hours of sleep in 40 hours. I got a decent amount of sleep Thursday night; worked almost all day Friday to make up the hours I lost on Wednesday, and then watched tv with my mom last night until midnight. I know! I'm such a glutton for punishment!. Especially since I had to wake up at 7:15 this morning to cook a crustless quiche for a Relief Society brunch (which turned out so nice, by the way). And then my mom and I went to Costco and other stores the rest of the day. And I have to say... I'm bushed!

Of course, the week has had its highlights...

One of the guys at my mom's job couldn't believe I'm 28. He said I look no older than 24. It's always so nice (once you actually want to be thought of as younger) when someone thinks you are younger :).

I got to look at this little cutie try to figure out who the heck I am (and possibly what the heck is wrong with me). If I had to guess at what she's thinking at this moment, it would be one of the following two thoughts (if not both):
1. Please tell me I'm not related to this person.
2. Please tell me I won't have to deal with her on a regular basis... I think she's nuts.
Photobucket
Sorry Emily... You are stuck with me ;). Anyway, she's so expressive. I love her little facial expressions. Christina said she's starting to smile now. It's so excited to watch them grow and change, and they do that so much in the first year. Oh yeah, and I "stole" this picture from my sister's blog :).

I got a surprise package from my cousin Elka! Okay, I know she told me she sent me a package. But I'd forgotten about it. So, I was so surprised when it arrived on Wednesday. And the contents were oh-so-awesome :). Butterfingers (which will probably be forever more an item in all packages in this family) and an "I love Jim" (from The Office) mug. Thank you, dear Elka! You make me laugh!
Photobucket

I had a lovely conversation with my dad last night. He makes me laugh too. I love filling him in on life in this Pacific Northwestern state. It's fun to talk to him and hear him laugh.

It's Off to Work [I] Go!

Ah yes... So after something like five months of unemployment, I am finally working again. Though not the job I'm trained for, I'm thrilled to have a job in this economy. I'm working part-time at my mom's work doing filing-type things. One thing I really like about the job is that I can pretty much set my own hours. I can get up to 30 hours a week, and I can work them whenever I want. So, if I don't feel like getting up at the crack of dawn (okay, so maybe 8 a.m. isn't really the crack of dawn, but sometimes it feels like it :)), I don't have to! In fact, today I went in at 11. It's also nice to have something to do. And, of course, it's always nice to be earning an income of some sort :).

And really, other than the odds and ends of everyday life, I don't have anything else exciting to report. At least nothing that comes to me. I'm almost done with Breaking Dawn, and have about a bazillion books on my to-read list. I'm excited that Lost is starting back up this week. I thought the most recent episode of The Office was hilarious (we will have to discuss this, Elka). And so yeah... It's really just Nilla Life as usual. I'll be sure to let you know should anything out-of-this world exciting happen, though :).

And though I'm sure we all know it, I feel I should stay true to form and tell you this is a song-title post :).

*And Elka and Virginia have guessed the movie quote correctly.*

I Smell Like Strawberry Milk

I'm supposed to be reading Breaking Dawn. I finally finished Harry Potter #5 last night and did start Breaking Dawn (at Christina's absolute demand). I got to page 13... What!?! It was after 1 in the morning! So, I told Christina an hour ago that I was going to spend the next several hours reading the book so I can talk to her about it. I have failed in that endeavor thus far. I was feeling a tad bloggy and thought I should grip that feeling and actually blog for the second time this week :).

Not that I have anything interesting to say. Other than that I smell like Strawberry Milk. You know? The Nestle Quick pink stuff with the pink bunny on the front? And not because I spilled that all over me. It's actually my hair. I bought this shampoo and conditioner (VO5 Moisture Milks) in strawberry scent. And it turns out the smell reminds me of strawberry milk.

And then my sister has this shampoo and conditioner that I have used that is Suave brand called "Ocean Breeze." It reminds me of the smell of the Sunflowers perfume that was popular (at least to me) in the mid-1990s. I had some of that stuff. Anyway, so there are 2 smells I've smelled like lately :).

Isn't it funny how smells can hurl you into a memory? I find it amazing that our minds have those connections. That a smell can make you think of something completely unrelated. Everytime I smell that shampoo and conditioner of my sister's, I think of my old high school days at Balboa High School. I'm not really sure why, but that is the memory connected to the smell. Our minds and bodies are phenomenal.

In other random news... I actually know someone in Panama who is a "big whig" in this academy down there that was founded when the U.S. schools closed. This academy is based on the old DoDDs schools that were there. Anyway, I happened to be particularly annoyed one day about things and emailed this lady with whom my mom used to work and who now is a counselor at the academy and one of its founding members. She emailed me back telling me to submit my resume and stuff and she'd talk to the director about me. Huh. Decisions, decisions.

O Canada, Eh?

So, for the most part, my blog title is oh-so-appropriate. My routine life is generally so vanilla. But when it's not vanilla, it's really not vanilla. When it's not vanilla, it's probably something akin to Good Heavens (which is a legitimate ice cream flavor in Blue Bell brand :). And it's quite delicious :)).

To highlight this so you can decide if you want to continue reading, here's the short of my new life's experiences that all happened in 2 days!:

1. I went to Canada.
2. I stayed in the nicest hotel I've ever stayed in (and cleanest too).
3. I was in close proximity to a killer whale.
4. I watched an NHL hockey game in person.
5. I went to a casino.
6. I played the "slot machines" (or their modern equivalent).
7. I left with more money than I went in with!

And now the long of my new life's experiences, if you care to read the details and see the pictures :)...

So Friday morning broke nice and early. And unfortunately, especially for me, it's still dark in Washington State at 7:00 a.m. Ick. And my motto was once (and pretty much continues to be, for all intents and purposes), "If the sun ain't shining, then why should I?" But there are exceptions to every rule. And Thursday morning was one of them. It was still hideous, though. But see, my mom is an office manager for a funeral home. And every once in a while, they get some pretty darn cool perks. This was one of them. All the office managers from all the funeral home locations owned by this company in the Seattle area were invited to go to Canada and a Canucks hockey game, courtesy of the company (which means FREE, by the way), and they were allowed to take one guest. My mom asked if I'd like to go. Oh you have no idea how I needed a getaway. Anyway, we stopped by my mom's job to drop off stuff for the work party that was the following evening, and which we assumed we wouldn't have time to pick up after getting back from Canada. And we got on the road by 8:30. We picked up a lady my mom used to work with who was also going (she works at a different location now), and then we caught the Kingston Ferry. For those of you not familiar with the area in which I live, here is a very tired me on the ferry, by a huge map, pointing to Kingston:
Photobucket
Let's just say it was a cold and windy day (though thankfully not cold enough to snow anymore!), so I was chilly (and looking rough -- but what do you expect from 7 in the morning?) as I took a picture on the top deck of the ferry:
Photobucket
This was actually the first time I took the Kingston Ferry. It was only a 30 minute ferry ride, and then we were back in the car and driving to Canada. We stopped in Bellingham to eat lunch (at Applebee's) and then continued on our way. It took us all of about 10 minutes to enter Canada (once again I got to show someone that hideous passport picture of me...). And we didn't do a terrible job of finding the hotel, which was in the heart (on the water) of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Man that's a HUGE city. And on the outskirts of the city, they still had mounds of snow, which we learned later was also rare for them.

We got to the hotel around 2:20ish and they let us go ahead and check in a little early (which I was so glad for). The room was small, but so clean! Cleanest hotel room I've ever been in. And check out the size of the TV! Had we been paying, this would have cost $159 Canadian per night.
Photobucket
We were on the 14th floor. Here's the view (the flash wouldn't go off, so I'm not really visible):
Photobucket
My mom and I spent some time watching big ships come in and also small airplanes take off and land on the water! The bathroom was lovely. Seriously so clean. And they left nice shampoo and conditioner, which made my hair feel fabuloso, so I kept the leftovers :).
Photobucket

So, along about 5 or so, we headed down to the lobby to meet up with the other office managers there. Oh my gosh... I was so horrified when I learned the big-mouth lady I could hear as we got off the elevator was one of "us." She was so loud! And kept referring to the Canadians as "these people." Ugh. Just dig me a hole, please. Her husband was with her, and he is some kind of sales manager in another location, and he thought a lot of himself. He told me what my name would sound like by someone who spoke Hebrew (since he learned Hebrew once). It sounded like someone hocking a loogie. Finished by the -ila. Nice. Yeah, so he and his wife were definitely not my favorites. But, whatever. So, we had to catch taxis over to the stadium. Now there was an experience. There was hideous traffic, and it cost me, my mom, and Sue (the lady we rode up with) $20 bucks just to get there. (For the record, the return trip was less than $10). So he drops us off outside of the stadium where we are allowed to enter a special door, because we have VIP tickets. So we get on this elevator with this other huge group of people. But somehow, we end up on the elevator first. And I turn around and see this huge killer whale stepping aboard the elevator. Ummm, yeah. I know I made a face of shock. Which I think is why he zeroed in on me, but whatever. He came right over to me and kept "looking" at me through his mouth (well, the whale's mouth, as that is where I guess the dude could look out). I was soooo embarassed! I felt like a 15-year old. I kept moving away from him and I so wish I could see that from an outside perspective. I seriously regret that I didn't get over my embarassment and take the opportunity to have my picture taken with the Canucks' mascot. But I was truly flustered. I felt really really red. I don't like to be the focus, and of course everyone in that elevator was watching this exchange. Oh, I could have died! Anyway, he got off after one floor, and I am still kicking myself for not getting a grip and asking for a picture. Sigh... Would've been totally cool.

So, we get off on the 2nd floor (the executive level) and walk to our "executive suite," where there are snacky foods and drinks. Mostly alcoholic, which that annoying guy with the loogie-hocking was really anxious to get everyone to drink. But I requested soda, so they brought more soda in. So check me out! I'm at my first major sporting event (and trust me, I never thought I'd be at one, least of all, hockey).
Photobucket
And here I am with the famous zambonies behind me :).
Photobucket
They brought in real food after a while (chicken sandwiches, chicken fingers, and salad), and the game started. The Canucks were playing the St. Louis Blues, so they sang both the Star Spangled Banner and O Canada. I'll tell you what was weird! It was so quiet! I didn't even know the game had started until I happened to notice all the players congregating in one spot on the ice (obviously chasing the puck -- or the ball, as the obnoxious woman kept calling it). So here's a little video of the game underway (and man they move fast. It was hard to keep up with the puck):

Oh yeah, and in the videos, if you listen closely, you can hear the loud lady. She sat unfortunately much closer to me than I'd hoped, considering how much room we had. Between periods (there are 3 of those, it turns out), a huge killer whale blimp would fly around and drop gift certificates. No, I didn't get any ;). Anyway, after the first period, my mom and I got our picture taken together:
Photobucket

I will say it was way cool when Canada scored, being that we were in their stadium. I'm sure in St. Louis' stadium, it would've been cool for the Blues to score. But I wanted to make sure I caught it on film when the Canadians scored, because it was almost instantaneous and pretty awesome (the buzzer you here at the beginning was right after the shot went in):

In the end, the Canadians lost 4 to 6. But it was still fun. And yes, I know I'm probably going to eat crow on this one, because I never thought I'd actually think a live sporting event would be any fun. But this was. I probably should have tried a UA game (though admittedly I was going to try to take Julie to one, but it didn't work out). Although the heat of the outside in AL would have been hot :(. So, after the game, we left the stadium and tried to find cabs back to the hotel amidst the panhandlers. YIKES. Okay, so that part wasn't so cool. But, we stuck together as a group (there were 7 of us together) and managed to get back to the hotel. A hotel with a doorman! Who opened cab doors for us and stuff! Hahaha... So cool. My mom and I went to our room and just relaxed while watching TV. I watched an old episode of Scrubs. One of my favorite episodes: My Way Home, where they allude to The Wizard of Oz throughout the episode. And then it was midnight and time to turn in.
Photobucket

On Saturday morning, we woke up and checked out by 9:30, so we could be on our way back to the U.S. Wow! Now this was totally opposite of getting into Canada! I felt like a common criminal (after the hour-long wait just to get up to the border patrol)! Oh, before I tell that story, let me put up my picture of me standing at international boundaries (it took so long to get through border patrol that I had enough time to get out of the car twice -- and then some, had I wanted to -- to be in pictures!):
Photobucket
So, we get up to border patrol and hand over our passports. Oh, FYI, you can't be on your cell phone while going through border patrol. Susan (the lady who rode with us) found that out the hard way... So anyway, they ask, "How long were you in Canada?" "One night." "What were you doing there?" "We went to a hockey game." "Which game?" "The Canucks and the St. Louis Blues." "Who won?" "The Blues." "Why this particular game?" "Because our company sent us." "What company do you work for?" "A funeral home." Conversation over... "You ladies have a nice day." Oh, and somewhere in there was the obligatory question of where we were headed home to. But dang! Is it so criminal to leave the country overnight to watch a hockey game??? That was an experience! I started feeling guilty, with all those questions!

Next stop was Tulalip Resort and Casino for lunch. You know those huge buffets they have in casinos... It was yummy. Here are Susan, me (I look like a kid in this picture!), and my mom:
Photobucket
You aren't allowed to take pictures of the gambling floor. The waitress told us that. Anyway, I told my mom I just had to do it just once. So, she gave me $5 and I got a ticket (so much for quarters and slot machines with arms to pull), and I just started pressing buttons on a machine where I put my ticket in. And would you believe I turned that $5 into $18? Hahahaha... Okay, so not big winnings, of course. But if you come out ahead, you come out ahead! (And this solidifies my theory for anything with buttons -- like video games and the newfangled "slot machines" -- you just press all the buttons a lot and randomly and you will win :). Used to drive my brother and Heath NUTS when I'd beat them at video games by just pressing a bunch of buttons over and over again. Mostly because they took the time to learn the button combos to do the "special moves" and I just pressed the buttons, managed some of those same moves (couldn't duplicate them on purpose, though) and would win :). So, there you go... there's my button pushing philosophy. So anyway, I returned the $5 to my mom and kept the rest (except $1 I thought I'd play while we were waiting for Susan to finish up. I lost all but 3 cents of that stinkin' dollar -- which means I was done! -- and just kept the ticket for picture purposes :)). So, I personally went in with $0 and left with $12. And I can say I did it. And that satiates my gambling needs for life ;). Oh, so here are my two tickets: from the game and the casino:
Photobucket

We took the Kingston Ferry back once again, and here are a couple of pictures of that, for Julie's benefit. This is the bottom deck of the ferry where the cars park and ride:
Photobucket

We dropped Susan off at her car and headed to my mom's job, because we were running late for the party! See, they were supposed to have a Christmas party in December. But both times they tried to do it, the snow thwarted it. So, we did an "I Survived the Snow" party. There was a decent turnout for the food. And then 7 of us remained to play Apples to Apples. And that was sooo fun! We played 4 rounds (or was it 5?) and we laughed soooo hard, and my stomach hurt from laughing so much! It was great! We left there around 9 p.m. and headed to the house. Then I was up super late last night playing catch-up on emails for Relief Society and chatting with my friend. And I had a super-early meeting this morning -- at 7, which meant I had to be out of here by 6:45, which meant I had to be up at 6:30. Okay, and please refer to my comments earlier about my motto and the sun not shining... But, I made it through. And here it is, 1:31 a.m. Monday morning when I'm finishing this up, and I haven't even had a nap!

So yeah, when life isn't vanilla, it's definitely "Good Heavens!"

Snow Blows in the New Year

And so it snowed again today. It's supposed to turn to rain sometime in the night and pretty much be gone by the morning. Here's to hoping, because I'm totally planning on hanging out with Christina tomorrow.

So how did you spend your new year? I stayed up alone in the basement watching Fever Pitch on hulu. That's such a cute movie. It'd been years since I'd seen it. It's one I'd like to own. I'm a sucker for chick flicks. On New Year's Day, my mom and I went over to Brad and Tarylyn's, along with Christina, Desiree, and Emily. We spent the whole afternoon over there and played several games of Apples to Apples (which was hilarious!). And I made those bacon cheese mini appetizers, which got unfortunately browned in the oven, but were still edible. I just hate it when my food turns out darker than it should. And my mom made wassail. And it was a fun day and we laughed a lot. Tarylyn and Christina really enjoyed the game, and I look forward to playing it again. And later on we made S'mores. The plain way, Julie. We didn't get artsy ;).
Photobucket

I ended up staying the night at Brad and Tarylyn's, since I'd promised the kids I would have a sleepover with them at some point. Samuel slept on one end of the couch and I slept on the other end. It was his turn to do so, since Saria did last time. I sure do love these kids. Even when they wake me up early in the morning. I still love them. I pretty much spent the day over there and we watched movies. The day was a pretty day... sunny. Oh, I got a text message from a Southeastern Alabama phone number that I didn't recognize, and the only message in the text was another Southeastern Alabama phone number I didn't recognize. I don't return calls to numbers I don't know, so if you are reading this and you're the one who sent it, that's why I didn't call you back. Of course, chances are, it was nothing. Because I didn't get another one. Probably a "wrong number" or the such.

My mom and I ran errands on Saturday, and then today was church. Being that it was the first Sunday of the new year, we swapped times with the other ward and are now going to morning church, which I personally prefer. Probably because I've always done it it this way, and I tend to be a creature of habit. But anyway, so I'm happy with the new time :). I taught my first lesson in Relief Society and I was so nervous! But everyone said I did a really great job and that no one would have known it was my first lesson if I hadn't said it was. So yay! I was seriously nervous. And then, of course, it started snowing in the afternoon while my mom and I were doing laundry and watching Bones.

Oh, and check out this gift I got from Elka, Mrs. S, and my Aunt Hila! (My mom got a black pair with warm lining):

Okay, so I never thought I'd have a pair of these, because they really are rather odd-looking shoes. But I have a pair now. And they are quite comfortable. And I'm all about slip-on shoes. Especially ones you can wear with socks :).

So, that about sums up life for me. Oh, except on New Year's, when we were getting ready to head to Brad's, there was snowy slush on my car. Enough of it that I wanted to use the windshield wipers to clear it off. So, I learned a new lesson (one that should be pretty obvious, but as I learned it the hard way, perhaps I should share it here...). Make sure you close your car door before turning on the wipers to rid your windshield of the snow. Because otherwise it just pours into your car. Genius... Genius.
