A Recap with (tons of) Pictures

So as many of you may have read, my dad didn't go to Panama after all. He came here instead. And I love him for it. Especially because he could have been in the lovely weather of Panama (and I know it was lovely, as a family friend emailed me the day after my dad arrived here and told me the weather there in Panama had been beautiful for about 3 weeks), but instead came to the snowed-in Pacific Northwest! On the up-side, he did come to all of our rescue! My dad knows a lot about cars, and he knows how to finagle a situation and keep us safe. So, he got my mom's car off this hill, even without the snow tires. He helped me unpack my stuff from the gargage to get my mom's snow tires. And then he proceeded to spend around $250 on tire chains for everyone's vehicles. Because nobody was prepared for the weather that we got. Have I said before that my dad is like a hero sometimes? Because he is. And I love him. Of course, I didn't end up getting my requested 3 bags of platanitos. But I guess I'll forgive him... this time :).

And for the benefit of those of you who (like I was until now) have no clue what tire chains for the snow look like, I took a picture of the chains on my car. So, that's just an FYI. Also, you can't go over 35 mph with these on. But it's also a hassle to get in and out of the car to take them off and put them back on when you need them or don't. Ah, the joys of snow driving! But I will say that it was preferable to cabin fever.

So the week of Christmas was spent driving around a lot from house to house. We took my dad to surprise everyone house-by-house, and let me tell you... that was an adventure. Brad's road was solid ice. In fact, they would just slide down it on a little sled-like thing:
Photobucket

And ice and tires (even snow tires) don't really mix. So, we had to roll backwards and get to a flatter part of the road and then put the chains on. Christina was so surprised to see my dad, she cried. Poor thing. And then we went and saw Ben and visited with him too. So, Tuesday was a busy day. Wednesday I don't even remember what we did, but I know we saw family. On Thursday, Christmas, my Aunt Sue and Uncle Ernie came over for Christmas. Christina and Desiree and Emily also came over, since Nick had to work and she would've been alone all day. So, here's the bulk of the pictures of present opening:
Photobucket

Here are a few pictures of me with some of my presents:
Christina and Nick gave me an mp3 player (a 4 gig Zune):

Brad and Tarylyn got me Mama Mia! (but I didn't take a picture... shame on me!).

Julie gave me a beautiful bag with my initial embroidered:
Photobucket

Aunt Sue and Uncle Ernie got me warm cozy pajamas and socks:

And Le sent me Chinese plums and toe socks!! Which are totally awesome for flip-flop wearing :) :

Christina got Breaking Dawn from Nick, so I will eventually borrow that from her. So that means, in one way or another, I got 3 of the 4 things on my wish list. Surprisingly, there were no takers on the Toyota Yaris. But perhaps that's good. Seems I should reconsider and ask for a 4-wheel drive instead, as preparation for any future huge snowfalls.

We ended up having to wait until Saturday to do our whole family Christmas, because Brad and Tarylyn were pretty much trapped in their driveway until Friday. So, Saturday we all went to Brad and Tarylyn's and we had our family presents. And then we went to Sears and took our first ever family pictures. Both for the 6 of us (my parents, Ben, me, Brad, and Christina) as well as for everyone, including all the grandkids. And I totally love that Sears releases the copyright.

Monday was spent running my dad around to see everyone one last time, because he left early this morning :(. All in all, it was great. I'm so glad my dad came to celebrate Christmas with us and see Emily. And just to close with a shot of snow, here's a video of the crazy weather!

10 Inches

That's how much snow was on the ground by the time it stopped snowing. Well, roughly 10 inches. It's wild! Nilla Wafer, who basically has never experienced much of any kind of snow, moves to the Pacific Northwest where it doesn't really snow. And we get the worst weather they've had in nearly 20 years!!! How crazy is that!?!

Here was the measurement before the snow started falling on Sunday:
Photobucket

That means I've pretty much been having cabin fever. Except Christina and the girls came on Saturday and stayed until today. Mostly because Nick was going to work the weekend and there was a fear that they might lose power and Christina felt better about being here with the new baby and Desiree in the event they or even all of us were to lose power. We didn't lose power here, but Brad and Tarylyn lost power for 2 1/2 hours last night. And they live close to Christina. Of course, we had to go down the hill and meet Christina, Nick, and the babies at the bottom of the hill and carry everything up the hill. We have not wanted to try any cars on this hill so far.

Okay, so here are more things I've learned about snow and ice.

1. Okay, when you step on snow, the next day, that place where you stepped becomes ice. And as I learned before, ice is slippery (even if you're in tennis shoes and not heels), so you definitely don't want to step on the spots. But they look pretty cool. Check this out... and even the dog prints do the same:
Photobucket

2. Don't attempt driving a car up a steep hill when it is not properly equipped with snow tires and/or chains. Here's what ended up happening to my mom's car when she tried this (she missed hitting the home-owner's fence by just a bit, and ended up abandoning the car about 4 houses down from where we live, overnight):
Photobucket

3. You can sweep off your car:
Photobucket

4. It does look pretty when it snows. And just when you thought Thursday and Friday's snowfall was phenomenal, you get to see what happens when it snows more on Saturday evening and Sunday:
Photobucket

5. Your feet eventually become numb if they are enclosed in snow for a long time (and Desiree doesn't like snow that is this deep, can you tell from her facial expression?):
Photobucket

6. Desiree only thinks it's fun to get thrown and stuck in the snow two times. And then she's done with that:
Photobucket

7. Snowballs really do hurt:
Photobucket

8. But they don't taste bad. Yes, I know, and have always known, that it's ice... frozen water. But come on. I had to taste a snowball:
Photobucket

9. According to Christina, Emily looks like a frog in this picture (she was getting lotioned up):
Photobucket
Okay, so that wasn't really related to snow and ice.

10. On snow days, you just need to have snackies. So, I made Overnight Cinnamon rolls (consult your cookbooks, family), cheese olivettes (thanks, Elka, for putting the idea in my head), lush dessert (because we had the ingredients, so why not?)), and applie pie (because the apples had to be used). In our defense, we had a very healthy (and yummy) Garlic Vegetable Soup... also in the cookbook :). And for once, there isn't a picture associated with the food I mention! Will wonders never cease?

11. Perhaps most importantly... You're never too old to make your first snow angel :).
Photobucket

Want to know something I learned about winter weather about 8 years ago? I learned that the term is wind chill, not windshield. See, the first year I was anywhere that actually got cold enough to use the term wind chill (remember, I spent the first 18 years of my life in Panama, where the weather never changed, other than to be rainy or dry), I thought they were saying windshield and that the way they determined that was by touching the windshield of a car and whatever that glass registered was the temperature they were announcing. I had been in Alabama a good couple or so years before I realized what they were really saying. I guess I could blame in on the Southern accent, right? Hahahahaha.... Okay, if you know me, you know me thinking it was "windshield is so Nilla of me :).

*Okay, and Elka and Anna have guessed the movie quote correctly! *

(Anna, the previous thing up there was not a quote. I had just not been keeping up with the quote of the week thing, and I didn't know when I'd put up a new quote, so I wrote that I hoped my quote game would start again in the near future when I start watching the movies I own once again :). But your guess was pretty darn good, based on what I wrote! Sounds like a line from one of those movies!).

Wish List 2008

So, I've seen a few people putting up their wish list with pictures on their blog. I figured it would be a fun thing to do ;). So, here's my wish list, in no particular order:
This is a Toyota Yaris. I want a new car. Not that I'm knocking my old one. My current car has been doing wonders for me. I've mistreated it by leaving it out in the elements and letting it become covered in about 8 inches of snow. I'm hoping by the time this deep freeze is over, it will forgive me and continue to work :). But seriously... It's paid for. It has air conditioning and a heater. It has done a lot of travelling for me (like Tuscaloosa to Dothan and back several times; like Dothan to Julie's house and back; like Tuscaloosa to Atlanta and back). I can't complain. But, one of the things I'd love is a new car. I don't kow if I'll go with brand new, simply because of depreciation. But I'd like it to be pretty new, like only 2 or 3 years old when I purchase it. And I also want to go with a Toyota or Honda or something. Mostly because they have good ratings and seem to last. Well, while in Panama, my dad and I rented a little Toyota Yaris. It was a nice car and got phenomenal gas mileage. And I actually like the color of the car in the picture above. So anyway, for now, Im leaning toward a Toyota Yaris. An mp3 player. Not this exact brand or model, per se. Just an mp3 player. I haven't done much research on them to find out the best bang for my buck. Mostly because I don't have a lot of bucks to spend on frivolity right now, so I don't need to research it at the moment :). But, I do want one eventually. Just something carry with me and have a whole bunch of music right at my fingertips. Anyway, so I'd welcome anyone's input on mp3 players. I don't even know where to begin looking.

I wouldn't mind owning this movie on DVD. It was really cute. I would like to see it again and will probaly try to make a girlie night out of it, if I ever get my own place. This is definitely a movie geared more towards girls than guys :). And let's face it... the ABBA music just makes you want to get up and dance! (or is that just me???).

The final book in the Twilight saga. I don't actually need to own this book, I just want to read it. But, as I'm making my fantastical wish-list here, I might as well stick it in, since it's something I want right now.

And there you have it. My wish list for 2008 at this moment. Of course, these are all just wants ;). I have been very blessed and have everything I need. Even without a job right now, I am still living in a warm, safe house with and close to my beloved family. Except my dad. Punk. He went to Panama for Christmas instead of coming here. I'm going to give him 10 lashes. I guess I can't blame him too much, though. It's breezy and balmy dry season in Panama right now. Here we're expecting up to 2 feet of snow in the next couple of days. What would you choose?

Anyway, so in regards to my list... Anyone feeling rich enough to contribute can contact me ;). Hahahahaha.

[Not] Walking in a Winter Wonderland

It's pretty outside. But I'm not tempting fate twice. There's something like 3 inches of snow in the back yard. *Correction... since I started this 2 hours ago, we've gotten tons more snow. I'd say we got around 7 inches! And the very bottom layer of that is ice. My mom called to tell me she made it to work, but doesn't know if she'll make it home. See... she works on a hill and we live on a hill. And ice and hills don't mix, kind of like ice and high heels :). Anyway, it's still snowing like crazy out there. And like I said, it's pretty. But I'm staying inside where it's nice and warm and snug. And I'll read and watch a movie or something. But, for your enjoyment, this is what it looks like. I tried to take a few pictures to show you how deep the snow is. I'd say we're up to around 6 inches now...

Okay, so since my sister blogged about Miss Emily, I will now share my pictures :). She's so tiny! And, in my opinion, she looks a lot like Nick. Desiree has been a good big sister.

Oh, and let me tell you how sweet Desiree is. Desiree stayed with my mom and me on Thursday after Emily was born so that Nick could rest and be with Christina. So she and I watched Wall-E (which is a totally cute movie, by the way). Here we are, snuggled up and ready to watch the movie on the computer:
Photobucket

Okay, so here are the pictures of Emily, starting with her cute little long feet (click on here to get to the rest of the pictures):
Photobucket

And then, here is a picture of me, Christina, and Desiree on Monday. We had a lovely day together and we had a special "big girl lunch". We had cheeseball and crackers and confetti pinwheels, along with desserts that my mom and I made the day before :). It was just something special to do with Desiree and Christina... to pamper a little bit :).

The Slippery Slidy Glide

Okay, so it's truly a conundrum when you have two great ideas for a title that involves a song. One involves a song title. The other involves a background line in the background part of a song from days long gone by... and almost forgotten ;). But, when you can't find the song "I Don't Like Snow" by Shorty and Slim anywhere on youtube to link my readers to, that kind of solves the conundrum. Though, if you want to hear a clip of that song by Shorty and Slim, click here and then look for the song title on the left and click on that. But only if you have a program that can play it ;). Anyway, so my conundrum was solved, as I mentioned... And so you get a title inspired by a line in a song from about 1990. A song probably most of you don't know and never would have, had it not been for me. A line I should probably be ashamed to admit I know. Because by so admitting, I admit to the fact that we (Brad, Christina, and I) owned the cassette tape of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Coming Out of Their Shells. Also, I should mention that, since I was sitting here listening to this song (called Skipping Stones), I didn't hear that line "slippery slidy glide" in the background. So, this may be yet another example of how I was raised to butcher songs. But, I'm sure you will forgive me, as I am sure this lengthy explanation is bringing at least a small semblance of a smile to your lips... Even if you are laughing that we not only had this cassette tape, but also because I'm willing to admit that I loved this song. And so, I hope Tarylyn is reading this. And I hope she reminds Brad of this. So that next time I see him, he can make fun of me.

Okay, so now to get to the point of my title... the slippery slidy glide. And why I don't like snow. Get ready to laugh, if you aren't already. (I figure this is a good way to bring some laughter to my best friend's face at the beginning of her birthday week :)). And so begins the story of the lesson for the girl from Alabama....

So, it did snow more last night. Not whole heaps, but a bit more. And so the cars were covered in snow. My mom and I had meetings at church at 11 this morning, and we rode together. And may I admit I was secretly hoping that the snow would have melted, because then it would mean there was no chance of black ice? (This is where my dad gets back at me for laughing at him about the 27 degree weather in Alabama around Thanksgiving). The cold and snow don't really bother me, until it's time to drive. Then I'm nervous about it. Anyway, so my mom drove. I got my church clothes on (before we left the house, mind you) and, since my boots were upstairs in my mom's room, I just decided to go with my black heels. Of course, my boots are also heels, so I don't think this scenario would have played out any differently. Well, so my mom and I leave the house. She walks down the steps first. I take my first step and... well, it's hard to describe really. I know it was loud, because my mom immediately turned and started worrying about me. I'm thinking that by then, I was on the floor, but it all seemed to go in slow motion as I tried to figure out how to stop myself from falling, even though I know there was no way to do so. And so, I made it down three ice-covered steps by simply taking one small step. Is it too cheesy to say "One small step for the Nilla... One giant slide for her body." Oh, I'm sure it was quite graceful. My mom was immediately apologizing, but hey... She's not the moron that wore high heels on icy steps. I seriously wish I could describe it. It was surreal knowing I was falling and there was nothing I could do about it. So:

Fact: High heels don't have good traction.
Fact: Heels with ice/snow don't mix.
Fact: My flip flops turned out to be a better shoe choice for the snow than the heels did, since I didn't slip in those :).
Fact: I am a 28 year old with skinned knees.
Fact: Not so crazy about the icy snow anymore.

And so now my left heel looks like this (if you can't tell, that little plastic peg on the end of the heel that you're supposed to walk on is missing):
The other tragedy
And my legs look like this (aren't they a sexy shade of white in addition to the scraches?):
My unhappy legs
My right leg got the worst skinning. My left leg just got more of them, from my knee down to my foot. Oh, and my butt was wet from sitting on the cold, wet cement to inspect my boo-boos. Poor Nilla.

And since I might as well share the other funny story that this story evoked from memory as I was telling it to Julie... And because Julie needs to laugh some more :).

In the summer of 2006, I spent a week in Florida with Julie, her mom, Alysha, and Julie's Aunt Sara. It was a wonderfully and much-needed lazy week of garage-saling, swimming, reading, and sleeping. And I think it rained quite a bit. So, one evening, Julie and I ran to the Publix close to the house. It had previously rained, so the parking lot was wet. Oh, and I was wearing the red flip-flops (the same ones in the snow pictures, gals). What can I say? Flip flops are kind of like all-weather tires. Only they are "shoes," not tires. Well, we were walking out of the store and toward the car. We walked across the crosswalk painted sections of the parking lot. And the paint was wet. Not wet, as in freshly painted. Wet as in slick. And it turns out my flip flops don't have such great traction (on wet paint). And my foot slipped. Luckily that time, I was able to catch myself. But not before Julie saw me and started laughing. I explained to her about the wet paint and she was like, "That paint was not wet!" All the while laughing her butt off. Of course, she thought I meant fresh paint. But even years later, she still said I didn't slip because of the slick paint. Until today, she finally accepts that wet paint (wet from rain) becomes slick and slippery, because I told her my mom told me to be really careful to not step on the painted lines in the church parking lot today precisely because they'd be wet and slippery. So Julie told me tonight that she'll believe me now, since my mom said it. She cracks me up.

Fact: My flip flops, though they don't have the greatest traction, have better traction than my heels. I didn't completely fall in the flip flops.

Of course, it is also true that, while there in FL that week, we swam a lot in her aunt's pool. And here and there, there were little tiled turtles on the pool tile. And it was wet (bcause it was in the water). And I slipped on it too. And Julie laughed at me again and didn't believe me that it was the slick turtle tiles... She believed me after she (or maybe it was Alysha) slipped on them after I left. Hahahaha... You better watch it Juliebean... Or else I'll knock you over in my attempt to stop myself while skating again. Oh my gosh, that is such a funny memory too, though it was awful at the time.

Also, I think it is so hilarious that 4 of the 5 comments from the last blog post are commenting on my flip flop wearing in the snow! I wonder what you all would have said if I'd taken pictures the first time I went out... without jacket and in flip flops! I put on the jacket for the sake of the picture :). But, to answer your questions and comments:

Tarylyn: yes, my mom does know I go out like that! Who do you think took the picture!?! (I know you're referring to that crazy Pizza Hut lady, though ;)).
Elka: Hope you get your house painted!
Heather: Glad it's a little warmer for you guys there. I seriously could live out my days happily (as far as weather is concerned) if it would just be in the 70s and no humidity all year long.
Becky: Thanks for the compliment :). Although you may have spoken too soon, what with my fun fall today!
Julie!: I miss you too, girlie!

And, to close:

Fact: I'm soooo sick of looking at sweets. My mom and I have spent the last two days baking yummies. And they are pretty and fabulous. But I'm sick of even looking at them, much less considering eating them. UGH.

The Snow is Coming Down in [My Washington] Town!

I guess when you don't blog much, you can have 3 song-title posts in a row. That's my new rule :). So, I'm so excited to get to use my new song-obsession for this title! Here it is, in case you missed it in my news flash. It sounds kinda folksy, like Simon and Garfunkel.

Okay, so I've had lots of exciting things happen this week. Well, one majorly exciting one, that is currently in the news flash. But, that's my sister's news, so I won't post my pictures until she has done hers. Which might be a while, since she just had a baby ;). But, Emily is cute. And everyone is home and doing well.

Today was a long day, though. For the record, doctors should have the decency to discharge their patients a lot earlier in the day than 6:15 when they (the patient) is good and able to go home. Especially when that patient was told at 8 a.m. by the nurses that she could get her stuff ready to go and change into her regular clothes. So anyway, my mom and I were going to be baking all day, but we ended up only baking tonight after dinner. We got a lot done. I'm sure I'll have pictures tomorrow, after I've gotten everything picture-ready and the rest of the baking done :).... So there I was, heading downstairs at 11 p.m. to get a water out of the fruit room (this huge pantry under the stairs here). I look out the window and what do I see??? (Not popcorn popping on the apricot tree, for those of you singing this tune ;)). A blanket of snow. Totally snow. So cool! Okay, so we had snow in Alabama last year, yes. But not this much. It was so cool. So yeah, I had to grab my camera. I guess we probably got about 1 1/2 inches of snow. Is it done snowing for the night? I don't really know. We'll find out tomorrow. Or later today, since it's technically Sunday. Fresh snow really is pretty. But, I don't have snow tires, so I'm cool if it all melts tomorrow and the weather warms up. We live on a huge hill. Wouldn't be the coolest thing ever to go sliding down it in a car.... Oh, and the other sucky thing about snow? It makes the yard look so pretty and fresh that you totally forget about the dumb dog poop hidden beneath the snow... Until you step in it and get mad. The good thing about the snow in this situation? It froze the dog poop pretty much, so it came off my flip flop without problems when I scraped it on the edge of the cement. The other good news? I have a spare pair of flip flops. The pair in the picture? They're totally going to be washed tomorrow. With or without poop on them, it touched them. It's time for them to get a nice washing. Elka, stop laughing.

Life in the [Slow] Lane

Because let's face it. My life is not very fast-paced :). And, though it wasn't my original intention, I did end up with a song-title post. So, here's the song :). I will say... One thing I do gain from doing "song-title posts" is that I learn artists and songs better. I didn't know the Eagles did this song until I just looked it up. I'll just file that away in my freakish memory for possible future use :). Also, was just listening to the lyrics as I listen to the song. Turns out that life in the slow lane, like life in the fast lane (according to Don Henley), will also make you lose your mind. So, is there a medium-paced lane?

I seriously Okay, so I started that line of thought and then went above to add all that about the song, and totally forgot my line of writing...

I have issues :).

So anyway, I just can't believe how little I blog anymore. Just never feel "in the mood" to blog. Sad, huh? What's been going on this past week? Well... I spent time with Christina and Desiree. Shopped with my mom on Saturday. Spent 3.5 hours in Costco today. Am 430ish pages into New Moon. Talked to my dad. Went to Royce's baptism. Visited a new sister in the ward with the Relief Society President. Helped my mom at the funeral home last night, since they had their annual candle-light service in remembrance of those people who passed on this past year whose funerals they did. My mom's boss asked me to take pictures during the ceremony for the funeral home's scrapbook. I like to take pictures, but I have to admit that I felt a little awkward, since I don't even work there, asking people if I can take their picture for the funeral home... Oh well. My mom and one of her coworkers saw the pictures last night and were happy with them. Went to a coffee house with my mom tonight to show support to the women who sang and played the organ at last night's thing. My mom felt people from the funeral home should go and support them, since they came and supported the funeral home. We had mint cocoa and fun conversation.

What am I up to for the rest of the week? Because goodness knows I won't be blogging again soon, with my recent track record.... Well, helping Christina. Meeting my new niece on Thursday. Going to a Progressive Dinner thing for Relief Society with Michele (we will be having all courses of the dinner at different sisters' homes, which is why it's called progressive). That might be about it. Oh, and I'm sure I'll go to Institute. Baking yummy stuff to package and send to faraway lands... like Florida. Where they are sure to bring joy and happiness to my best friend ;).

Ah yes... So, that's life in the slow lane for you. Very, very thrilling. It kinda makes you feel like this:

Seriously... How can anyone not love this face?

Reunited... And it Feels So Good!

So, I had two choices for this blog post title. I ran them both by El and Ka... This one got the bigger laugh :). So... enjoy the song here.

As most know, our Thanksgiving was a huge event here in Washington. We had a family reunion for my mom's side of the family. First time we've had one since I was all of 7. So... over 20 years. And this was so wonderful! So much fun! And yes, we were reunited! In so many ways :).... I will give it to you from the top.

On Sunday, November 23, my Aunt Hila, my cousin Mrs. S, and her two daughters Little M and Baby L flew in. It was my first experience driving to the airport. I took my mom's car because it is a bit roomier. Plus, she has the pass that automatic deducts from an account when I drive over the bridge, whereas in my car, I'd have had to pay a $4 toll. It's also cheaper with the pass... So, I took my mom's car :). I made it to the airport, though I was about 30 minutes late. I was excited about figuring out the airport. We loaded everyone up and headed back to the house. I dropped them off and headed to church. After that, we headed home and all hung out a bit. Both Mrs. S and my aunt were exhausted from a day full of flying with two babies under age 2. Christina had come over to get Desiree, since we'd watched her that day since Nick was working over-time and Christina had to work.

On Monday, I took Christina to her doctors' appointment and then we both went back to the house to help make empanadas and hang out with family. That morning, we all woke up to our cars iced over. And I was up at 6 in the morning. Phew! It's been a long time since I've been up that early. I remember why I don't like it ;). We had a fun time, though this was definitely the beginning of the chaos! My mom, Aunt Hila, and my grandparents went shopping, so the rest of us girls prepared dinner and half of the empanadas. I ended up spending the night at Christina's since I was babysitting Desiree the next day at 7:30, and quite frankly, I didn't want to wake up that early and drive in the cold :).

Tuesday was the day Ka (of Elka fame) flew in. I watched Desiree until around 3 and then headed home to get my mom's car again. I was glad I had already driven the airport route once, since to get Ka, I would be going at night. And, in true Washington State fashion, it was drizzling. But, I made it :). With plenty of time to spare! Although I couldn't find the cell phone lot, so I gave up and went to a gas station so I could use the facilities. Then I parked under a street light in the parking lot and read until Ka called me to pick her up. It was great! Felt like we weren't being reunited after almost a year ;). Needless to say, we had a great ride back. She practically crammed aplets and cotlets down my throat :). Then we had to go out to eat, since she was hungry. So, we went to Shari's, where Ka actually made quite an offer to an employee there. She told him she'd do anything he wanted. Hahahaha... Okay, so not entirely true. I told her we could get this shot in front of the pies of the two of us. And she said (as the guy happened to be coming out toward us to collect the bill), "I'll do anything for you." And since she was facing him when she said it, he made a joke about the offer. So, as you see... the days of Nilla and Elka began with a bang ;). We then went to the house where we stayed up talking to our moms and laughed sooooo hard. And saw that our futures will involve holding things away from our faces and raising our eyebrows so as to see them better... Hahahaha.... Around midnight, we finally got to get ready for bed. Ka and I slept on the pull out couch bed. After we spent time laughing our rears off, of course :).
Elka and Nilla together again

Wednesday started early. Very early. Another morning that started at 6. But, there was so much to do. Aunt Hila, Mrs. S., Little M, and Grandpa went to run a couple of errands, and while they were gone, Baby L woke up crying. So, Ka decided to see if we could give her bananas. It was a first for her. And she had the cutest facial expressions. Most of the day was spent baking pies. Oh my gosh... we baked so many pies. I think we baked a total of 8 pies and two loaves of pumkin bread. Plus lasagna, garlic bread, and salad to boot. And somewhere in the middle of it all, Mrs S, Ka, and I went to see Twilight, which I really enjoyed. My mom, meanwhile, was out getting the cookbook printed. *Oh, we didn't go to Forks for many reasons. And it was probably good we didn't. We'd have never gotten everything done otherwise. In fact, we were working on assembling the cookbooks. Aunt Sue and Uncle Ernie got there also. It was a full house. And it was another late night, and with Ka and I sleeping on the sleeper sofa, we had to wait until everyone else was done. But, we gathered our comments for while we lay in bed later to discuss and laugh. Let us never forget the night Ka was awakened 3 times by the dog. And other gems worth remembering forever :).

Here are the rest of the pre-reunion day pics (click on this picture and it will take you to more):Christina and Desiree were exhausted on Sunday

And we have to have the candy shot!

The candy shot

Thursday began bright and early. And once again, we filled the kitchen. Plus we had to get everything up to the funeral home. Oh, did I mention that our family reunion was held in a funeral home? Why? Well, because my mom works there and we got use of the kitchen and huge room attached to the kitchen for our big day. So, my mom and Ka went up to the funeral home while Mrs. S and I ran to the store to get last minute ingredients (oh my gosh was it busy!). Then we dropped everything off and I picked up Christina after I got a shower. Christina had baked the ham, and it turned out great. Michele made home-made apple pie (we had a total of 10 pies there, people) and also sweet potatoes with marshmallows on top. Very delicious. And Tarylyn made the green bean casserole, which was also yummy! And of course we also had turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, frozen fruit salad, more sweet potatoes, potato salad, and waldorf salad. And mashed potatoes. And rolls. Oh my gosh there was soooo much food! Oh, but I am getting ahead of myself. So... Before getting Christina, I also went and helped decorate. The lime green color is everywhere for good reason. And don't you love our table decorations? There is an inside joke for why we had milky ways and butterfingers.
Like our table decorations???

Okay, so the reunion was a huge hit! Almost everyone was there. And it was soooo fun! And it's going to be hard to break it all down. But, I must :). At the very beginning, the four girl cousins went off to the side and took a picture together.

We decided to take the whole family group picture first, because Mrs S needed to put Baby L down for the night, since on the East Coast, it was already WAY past bedtime. And the pictures turned out so awesomely!!! Here's the front shot:
The family in our shirts

And the back shot:
The t-shirt backs

Why a back shot? Well, because the t-shirts were awesome! Like I said, we had this reunion at a funeral home, so we went with a totally morbid theme... How totally great are these!!!??? (You can't read them, so I'll tell you what they say... On the front, over the left breast, they say: "Families are like fudge -- mostly sweet with a few nuts." The backs have a cemetary scene and they say: The Lymans -- Not just a bunch of stiffs! (to go with the funeral home thing...). I told you we are morbid and slightly twisted ;).

Okay, so the turkey got in the oven a bit late, so while we waited for it, we played some games. Aunt Hila came up with great games, such as family BINGO and the toilet paper game. And here's the thing with the Toilet Paper game. You choose as many squares of TP as you want. But then you find out that however many squares you have, you have to tell that many facts about yourself! So, Ben, my older brother, had about 50! And you get the point :). I should mention that one of Brad's facts was that he is #1. And his next fact? That I'm #2. Hahahaha... Gotta love my brother. Brad told me yesterday that one of us who love The Office should have thought to say, as one of our facts: "Fact. The polar bear is the best bear." Or whatever it is that Dwight says that is so funny.

Next we sang the songs of the branches of military in which members of our family served or currently serve. Here are Brad and El (who arrived shortly before all the festivities began), who, along with Mr. N (Mrs. S's husband who wasn't able to be there due to school) were or are Air Force:

Then it was on to Family BINGO, which was a lot of fun too, even though I didn't win ;) (I'm so kidding).

Finally dinner was ready! We had a prayer and got ready to eat! Look at these busy bees in the kitchen! And then look at all our pies (and there are 2 more not pictured!)
The kitchen was busy

And so we ate. Because that's really what we do best :). So here are shots of each of the tables:

After dinner was time for digestion (shoot... we had to make room for all those pies!). So, there was minor cleanup while the kids learned the Chicken Dance, courtesy of my mom and Aunt Hila.

And then it was on to the talent show! Oh my how much fun this was!!! We had Little M do the "Smarty Pants Dance". And when she realized we were all applauding her, she really hammed it up and kept on dancing, much to her mom's surprise! It was adorable. Here's her Smarty Pants Dance (and also her mom's dance :)):

Ka also did a talent. She picked her nose with her tongue. Hahahaa.... I wasn't prepared and therefore didn't get it on video :(. (Okay, so she didn't really pick her nose. But she totally could have!). And then my cousins Jimmie and Arthur got up and "geeked out" to music:

And then Saria did some ballerina moves:

And then my Aunt Mounyen (aka Aunt Nene) sang:

And then my Aunt Hila and El did their skit. And this was hilarious! Aunt Hila forgot her lines immediately. And she didn't do so hot with the second line, either ;). Oh how we laughed!

And finally, the four sisters sang the song "Sisters" from White Christmas. And this is priceless. Left to right are my Aunt Hila, Aunt Nene, Aunt Susan, and my mom.

Priceless, no? There were two more games my mom had done. We had a guess the baby game. Which was a hit. Everyone wants copies of the layout my mom did of the little baby pictures. It was neat to guess :). And also one where you have to guess the candy name. And finally it was time for pie. And after pie, we took a couple more pictures of all the cousins:

And then we cleaned up. We were out of there by 10 and everything was so fabulous!!! I ended up spending the night with Christina, since she had to get up early (2:30 am) to get to work by 3 for Black Friday. Poor thing. And Nick worked at 8:00, so I slept there so I could babysit.

I ended up driving Nick to work Friday morning, but that was just right down the street and it was a cold day. So Desiree and I went back home and slept. And slept. When Christina got home, I headed home and started working on Panama night food. Oh my... We had another great menu. Arroz con pollo, empanaditas, cheese olivettes, and chinese plums. Hahaha... We were gong to have flan and banana cream pie for dessert. But we had so many leftover pies (we didn't even make a dent in them on Thanksgiving) that we opted not to do that... Also, my Aunt Hila, Mrs. S and the girls left early Friday morning, so they weren't there Friday night. Ben, Michele, Sean, Tony, and Royce also weren't able to make it. We so missed the family members who weren't there. But those of us who were there had a blast! We returned to the funeral home (look, it's a big crowd, and we need room!) and ate and laughed and visited. Good food all around once again :). I didn't get many pictures that night, but others did, and eventually my Aunt Sue is going to compile all our pictures into one CD :). So yay! There is a rather attractive one of me on Elka's camera... right? But here's what I did get. Don't you love the food shot? It really wouldn't be a Nilla post without it :).

Saturday, El and Ka, my mom, and I went to the Seattle Temple. It was wonderful. Will have to wait on Elka to send me her pictures. But, I have a picture from the food we ate afterwards :). We all went to Garlic Jim's after we hit the bookstore.

On the ferry ride back, we played Apples to Apples, which was so fun! When we got back to the house (after a much-needed stop for some yummy Coldstone), we played again with Aunt Susan. And we could always tell which card my mom threw in as comparison... For example, the card we were supposed to compare things with was "luscious" and my mom threw in a card that said "dark alleys." I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't find dark alleys particularly luscious :). There was another one that was similar to luscious and she threw in the card for "disco." We laughed soooo hard.

On Sunday, we went to church. Then El, Ka, and I (and my mom, though she didn't find it funny) watched the latest episode of The Office while we did laundry. Oh, and we ate leftovers and also those bacon cheese mini appetizers. Yumm-o. (Let me state that I haven't bothered to weigh myself after this foodie week). And we said prayers before bed. And, well... Elka's laughing at the memory :). *I've been feeling itchy*

On Monday, I had to take El and Ka to the airport. It was sad. We went by my mom's job so Ka could say bye to my mom. We happened to round the corner and there was a huge meeting going on inside the room where we had the reunion, and you can see in. Everyone stopped and looked at us. And then they waved. Hahaha... So, this was our final picture:
So long, Ka!

I'm so glad I got to drive them. We laughed and enjoyed the company on the way. I miss Elka already!!! And also, I'm a pro at the whole SeaTac airport. So anyone planning to visit me... Piece of cake! I talked to my mom's boss when I went back to trade cars. I'm probably going to do some filing for them for a flat fee. Then I went to spend time with Christina.

Today, I took Christina to her two appointments. She is now on maternity leave. I can't believe Baby Emily will be here in a week and 2 days!! I got to hear her heartbeat at the second appointment. So did Desiree.

So, thus ended the week of family. What a wonderful time. It was soooo much fun. And it feels empty here without them, even though it was certainly chaotic! But, we formed relationships and made memories we'll have forever :). Love you all!!!

*And don't forget... there are more pictures than I have put on here. By clicking, you can view them all :).
