Chasing Dreams

November 2008.

I should be in bed. But isn't that how every great story begins?

Not when your kids will wake you up before 7 in the morning ;)...

Life is...  life.  Things happen.  And they change you.  For better or for worse, they change you.  And I guess you (or, rather, I) determine whether it is for better or for worse.

I have decided to start chasing my dreams a little more fervently.

I am writing again.

And though it may not ever be what I dream it could be...  I'm writing.  I'm smiling at the memories my fingers are putting into words on a screen.  And I am preserving something for the future.  And that's what matters.

Finished Quilts

I think I mentioned that one of my goals this year was to make Lynnaea an I Spy Quilt.  And since I was already doing one, I figured I might as well do two -- and make one for her cousin Vivienne, who is only a month older than she is.

I finished them Thursday night!  (Well, I finished Vivienne's earlier -- like the Friday before.)

It feels so good to have accomplished this goal.  I learned a lot (since my quilting mentor Donna wasn't on hand every step of the way like she was 10 years ago!)  I am excited for future quilt projects.  And I am glad I could make something for my sweet girl that I hope she'll know comes with lots of love.

But first, a couple of selfies...  To feed my vanity streak :).
... And maybe my toddler's too.

Lynnaea's quilt:
And some close-ups:
I did the hand-embroidering for the words:
But sent the quilt off to be long-arm quilted, hence the pretty squiggly quilting.
I made the label and Donna send the cute "P.S. I love you" tag!
I had it out on the floor for her the next morning.
I think she liked it.

I did Vivienne's in purple.

I didn't long-arm quilt hers, but rather I did all the quilting on hers.  So mostly straight-stitch, except around the black border where I had a wavy stitch just for pretties.
Another close-up of the wavy...
And Vivienne's label and tag from Donna!
So I learned a lot.  I'm excited to be done -- but also excited I did them.  And still grateful Donna taught me how all those years ago :).

So, that's what I've been up to... Among other things :).

2014 Goals

So, now that it's the last day of January, I felt it was an appropriate time to actually get around the listing my goals for 2014.

So then I can get to work on completing a few more that were on my list for today :)...

1.  Lost 15 pounds by June.  This is the rest of my baby weight.  The pounds I put on because I like food, not really because of a baby...  Anyway, my broken down goal is 3 pounds per month...  January is done, and I can say I managed to lose 2 pounds.  But I've decided that I am just going to keep at it and keep my head up.  I can do this :).

2.  Improve my prayers.  Just felt like my prayers are sort of routine and lacking.  I know they need to be better.  So I'm working on it.

3.  Read 20 books for pleasure.  I love to read.  Didn't do it as much as I wanted to, but that's because I let other things get in the way.  Like facebook.  Haha...  So I've actually read 3 books so far.  But my 4th book choice is Don Quixote de la Mancha and that's almost 1000 pages.  It's going to slow me down!

4.  Make Lynnaea's "I Spy" quilt.  And I tacked on making one for Vivienne, since I might as well, since I'm already cutting all the hexagons anyway!  Plus she's young and will enjoy it.  One of these years I'll make quilts for the other 3 kiddos who didn't get one, but it probably won't be this year.  I'm happy to report I have all hexagons cut out and about 1/4 of the triangles.  So, on to the sewing!

5.  Finish Christmas ornaments by October.  I like to cross-stitch Christmas ornaments for all the nieces and nephews (on both sides) who are still in school.  And usually I'm scrambling in December.  So I'm setting this goal to avoid that.  And so far, I'm almost done with the 3rd!

6.  Go back to the Temple (every 2 months).  After having Lynnaea, I took a break for a while.  Now that she's older, I knew it was time for me to go back.

7.  Be grateful every day for something new and blog it.  I'm doing that.  It's called rockinthenillalife.blogspot.com ;).

8.  Look for a miracle each week and write it in my journal.  I believe there are little miracles all the time.  Much more often than only weekly.  But sometimes I'm not awesome at recognizing them...  And I want to be better at it.  And I want to document them for my posterity.

9.  Get involved in a community group.  Our Stake President has encouraged us to do this...  I'm not sure where I will fit, so I'm needing to look into it.  I would love to volunteer at a soup kitchen or something, but that may not be so feasible, because of a certain adorable 8 month old ;).

10.  Start knitting again and make something useful.  I think it's pretty self-explanatory.  I haven't picked it back up since Lynnaea was born, so I need to.

11.  Write in my journal weekly.  I'd set this as a goal once before and accomplished it.  And then life happened again and I stopped.  So I wanted to do this again.  I think it's important for me document life.

12.  Look outward more/serve more.  I easily focus on myself, and I am prone to feeling all "woe is me."  I think, as I focus outward on others more, there will be a lot less of the woe is me stuff.

13.  Cook one binder recipe a week.  So... I love food.  Love to cook.  Love to try new recipes.  And so I have collected a binder-full over the years.  And they haven't been organized at all.  Just stuck in there.  So I'm going through and trying out a new recipe each week to see which ones are "keepers" and which aren't.  And some of them are likely to be featured at Monday Meals whenever we do it :).

14.  Floss daily.  I'm like the world's worst flosser.  And every time I go to the dentist, they berate me for not flossing daily (even though I was really good about flossing every other day ;)).  So I'm trying to do it daily by just doing so in the middle of the day.  Because at night, before bed, I simply don't want to take the extra time.

So, there's the majority of my 2014 goals.  Here's hoping that I make some good progress!!!

To Write or Not to Write

If you've ever perused my "Nilla List" on the right side of this blog, you'll know that writing a book (and hopefully having it published) is one of the things I'd like to accomplish in life.

That dream took a back seat over the last few years.  But lately I've been contemplating it again.  Then the question becomes:  what would I write?  Because according to Never Been Kissed, "somebody once said, 'To write well, you have to write what you know.'"  So what do I know?

Pretty much my life is what I know.  I used to plan on writing the stories from my workplaces.  I even started writing them.  But I just went back recently and re-read what I've written, and I realize that I've changed to such a degree that I would eliminate some of what I wrote.  I was so very snarky in some of what I wrote.  Time and distance changed my perspective on some things and mellowed me.  And then, I had a list of stories to write, and some of them are forgotten now.

And would I even be able to get back into the groove of how I used to write?  I had several people tell me I should write a book, but that was years ago.  And I don't know why this is suddenly important to me.  But it is.

Anyway, that's just something I'm contemplating.

Also... I need to work on losing the extra baby weight.  Doesn't that sound fun and exciting!?!  Eh.  Not really.  But it must be done.

And since no post these days is complete without a picture of my sweet baby girl :)...

That's her sheep she's staring at so intently :).  And she is now in 3 to 6 month clothes.  Sigh...  She is growing so fast.  So bittersweet.  But isn't she adorable?!?  I love her!

34 Weeks, Among Other Things

We'll start with the all-exciting day of Chuck E. Cheese. Where a kid can be a kid. And an adult can lose her mind.  I generally try to avoid the place.  I am hoping it will not be a large part of my future as a consequence of having children.  But I will allow my children to have a childhood.  Even at the cost of Chuck E. Cheese.  Sigh.  Anyway, so what was I doing at Chuck E. Cheese?  Well, I happen to have a couple nieces who were invited to the birthday party of a little girl they knew from church.  And since they go to church with us, that means Christina has no clue who these people are.  And so, not wanting to leave them out of the fun stuff -- and not wanting the little girl who was celebrating her birthday to not have some friends there due to such a technicality...  I picked up Desiree and Emily and took them to Chuck E. Cheese.  Here they are, at pizza time.  It's funny.  Desiree totally understands the tokens and tickets concept.  Emily... Not so much.  She would have been completely content, I believe, to play in the completely free tunnels (gotta love a kid like that!).  Or, on the other hand...  If she's going to use a token, she wants to know if it's going to be in a ride that "moves."  Haha.  You know, the ones that don't offer tickets up for being awesome.  And that would all be fine and dandy if, at the end, there wasn't the all-important opportunity to pick out your Oriental Trading-quality prize!  So, I usually use a few of Emily's tokens to win her some tickets, just so she can "buy" a prize.  Yes, it would be a good lesson on choice and consequence ("Well, Emily, you chose to use your tokens in things that moved, but didn't give you tickets, so now you don't have tickets to get a prize.").  But this mommy-to-be was exhausted after 3 hours at Chuck E. Cheese, and didn't want to have to deal with that life lesson.  So, she had enough points to buy a little purple plastic wand with a star on top.  Totally worth it.  Anyway, they are cute, and I love them.
We got a surprise package from Pottery Barn kids via UPS the other day!  Thank you Stefanie (and Brady)!  Very cute bunny crib sheet (which we definitely were needing one of those!) and a cute soft stuffed bunny that Baby can one day snuggle :).
And this is a knitted blanket a lady from church gave us.  The same lady who is teaching me to knit and who made the other knitted things.  Sweet lady.  There is a pair of knitted booties she gave us as well.  I'm tickled to have such precious items to welcome our baby with.
This past weekend was Conference weekend.  We usually drive to the church and watch it on the satellite there -- mostly to keep us in that "church" mood of things.  Because I have noticed that, in years past when I'd watch it at home with my mom, I'd be unloading dishes, etc -- and then I missed a lot of stuff.  So we decided we would go to the church until we have kiddos who won't enjoy that all that much.  But, when we showed up at the church building for Saturday morning session, we were met with the news that the satellite wasn't working.  So we could choose to go to one of two other sort of nearby church buildings, or just come home and watch it online.  We totally opted for the home choice.  Back into jammies and onto the couch and snuggling under the blanket while we watched Conference.  It was nice and relaxing.  I think we took naps both days after both sessions were done, too.  Haha...  I enjoyed Conference, as I usually do.  Appreciated the reminder to let our children have a childhood.  And that I need to be a little more patient and forgiving with the weaknesses of others (because I certainly have my load of my own weaknesses that I hope others will be patient and forgiving of).  And yes, I loved what Elder Perry said about how obedience to law is liberty.

The other thing I got excited about this Conference is that we totally achieved our 72 hour kit goal!!!  I didn't want to unpack all of my stuff, but here is my backpack full of my stuff.  Jeremy has one too.  I have 7 different categories (food, clothing, kitchen/cooking, hygiene/toiletries, miscellaneous, survival, and another I can't remember right now) and each category gets its own gallon-size bag.  While we hope to never have to use them, we are happy that we are prepared in case we ever need to.  And I'm happy to finally have that goal crossed off my list (and our family goal list).  Now it's a matter of maintaining the kit -- rotating out the food and other things that expire, like headache medicine).  When Baby is born, I'll make a kit for Baby as well.  And then, every 6 months, at Conference, we'll get into our kits, eat all the food that weekend, and replace with new food :).  And try to get an idea of how practical our kits really are.  We bought a couple of wind-up items that use our strength to keep them going (one is just a flashlight, and the other is a flashlight/emergency radio combo).  So yeah, the initial outlay is a little spendy -- depending on what you put in there.  But it's done.
And so the next goal is to get all of our food storage.  We do pretty well, and I think we'd survive 6 months easily on what we have in the house.  But our canned goods could be improved upon.  And to do that, we are finding it necessary to get one of those food rotation systems.  Jeremy would rather design and build one, but there just isn't enough time in the day for all the things he'd like to design and build.  And since we want this goal achieved within the next few months, we'll just go the route of buying one.  If you're not familiar with what I'm talking about...  Go to the soup aisle at the grocery store.  The way they have all the soups now is what I'm talking about.  It will help me use the oldest stuff first and will be so much better organized than what I have going now!  We could potentially store up to 400 cans!  Anyway...  So that's our next biggie.  But that'll be another preparedness goal checked off our list.

In less "preparedness" category, but still "goal" category...  I've started cross-stitching Christmas ornaments.  Here it is April and I hadn't begun.  I didn't want a repeat of last year where I was trying to get them all done starting in October (and I failed, by the way).  So, I now have one done (just have to turn it into an ornament) and only 12 more to go.  I'm almost done with the 2nd one.  That's definitely a benefit of being an at-home-wife... I have time to sit and do these things, even amongst the other day-to-day chores and to-dos.  I want to get several of them done before munchkin arrives....  Because my time will be used slightly different then.

Here I am today at 34 weeks.  Baby wiggles a lot and I watch my stomach move a lot.  The other night when I went to bed, Jeremy rolled to face me, put his hand between my stomach and the bed, and the baby kicked him.  It was funny.  I'm pretty much a side-sleeper these days.  With a pillow tucked between my legs.  There have officially been a couple nights where I have seriously considered coming out to sleep on the couch, simply because the couch cushions are softer and therefore more enveloping, and I was thinking maybe I could get comfortable faster.  Because when I can't get comfy, it takes me about an hour and a half to fall asleep.  Nothing infuriates me more.  Haha...  If I do make the mistake of having "too much tummy" on the bed (not enough on my side), I pay the price when I start to move.  It's like the baby settles or something, and I'm lugging this huge weight.  It's been amazing, this pregnancy experience.  In so many ways so different than I anticipated.  But an amazing miracle in all ways.  A true blessing.

Jeremy and I are officially planning our Alabama trip.  We're looking at the end of October, mostly in the interest of cooler temperatures down that way.  Plus, by then, Baby will be around 5 months old.  It's funny, because we actually have to remember that we will have a baby in tow.  I think it may change our mode of travel significantly.  When he and I went down to visit in 2011, we took the light rail in Seattle to the airport.  This, plus the ferry ride at 4:15 in the morning, tacked on extra time to our travel.  I don't think if we're going to want to do that again or not -- with an infant.  It might be worth the $35 each to get the airporter...  Who knows.  It will be an adventure.  We'll probably have to go ahead and suck it up and check luggage (and pay for it -- boo!) for the first time since they started charging to do so.  Because I just don't think everything we'd need would fit into our allotted number of carry-ons.  And we'd still need to take the car seat.  So yeah, we are already thinking ahead.  But I'm excited.  I need a vacation :).  And probably some Mikata.  Because we will be there around my birthday, after all :).  And I'll probably also need some chick-fil-a and some O'Charley's potato soup.  Because those are must-haves, you see.  Maybe some Italian Express too.  Mmmmm...  I should stop now ;).

On a foodie note (as if the last few sentences weren't enough):  I had a dream I was at a fair of some sort, and I was horrified that none of the food booths sold nachos.  I actually said in the dream, "What kind of a fair doesn't have nachos!?!"  I've never gotten nachos at the fair, so I'm not really sure why I was so indignant.  I think almost every dream I can remember has me involved with food in some way, shape, or form (it's best when I'm eating it ;)).  Is this abnormal?  Haha...

Another Yogurt Trip

Benjamin turned 7 on the day we had Desiree's birthday party.  February is a bit of a birthday month in our family.  So, of course, it was time to take the birthday boy for some frozen yogurt.  It's actually Ben who introduced me to the frozen yogurt shop last year on his birthday.  And today I got a free one because of all the times I've bought frozen yogurt (buy 10 get a 10 ounce or less free!).  So now you know how often I've been there...  It's the kids' new favorite.  Except Emily, but I think she'll give it a try for her next birthday, now that she knows her sister went.  So Benjamin and I trekked up to the yogurt shop and enjoyed some frozen yogurt.  I am pretty plain and predictable.  I always get the same thing: cake batter flavored yogurt with various chocolatey toppings (like cookie dough bites and mini m&m's).  Benjamin went with toasted marshmallow yogurt and chocolate yogurt mixed, and a few toppings, including mint pastel chips.  He wasn't too interested in hanging out for long, so we didn't.  But we did have enough time for a picture!
He went with me to the library to return some movies and then I took him home.  It was a nice little visit, albeit brief.

The last few days I have been working on a couple things...  Planning the "Great to Be 8" party for church (something for all the kiddos turning 8 this year) and working on one of the goals Jeremy and I decided we need to actually do this year (and which has been on my goal list for about 2 years):  our 72-hour kits.  We had a list, and so I spent Monday collecting everything we already had and putting it in piles.  This lets me know what I need to purchase.  My goal is to have them done by General Conference in April so that we can get on the schedule of rotating every 6 months at Conference time :). I got that idea from my genius friend Jessica.  It seems like a really great way to remember to rotate!  I'm also starting to work out details for a baby shower I'm hosting at the end of March for our Primary chorister.   And currently I'm making Baked Tacos for dinner for when Jeremy gets home (our eating schedule is pretty out of whack when Jeremy is on swing shift).  I found the recipe on pinterest and made my own taco shells with corn tortillas :).  So hopefully it's tasty.  And tomorrow a gal from church is coming over and she and I are going to make home-made bagels together.  Sounds like good times to me :).

Then Friday I'll go take that dreaded glucose test.  Ick.  Oh well.  It must be done.  This baby is a-growing.  In fact, today I started the 3rd trimester, so we're in the home-stretch!  I have started researching car seats and I purchased a baby papasan chair at a thrift store for $3.50.  I figured it was a great bargain :).

We Are [Volunteers]

Okay, so it's technically a song title post.  But it's obscure.  I got it from a Primary (children's church) song called "We are Pioneers."  Anyone who knows that song may be signing it in their head now.  It's one of those types of songs ;).  But fun.

So this is just a little quick update, because I find myself with a few free minutes way too early in the morning (for my taste).
So this bag of goodies is why I chose the song title.  They are itty bitty tomatoes.  I got them from the garden at my mom's house.  I didn't' plant any itty bitty tomatoes this year.  These are called volunteer crops.  See, Jeremy and I were at my mom's on Labor Day so Jeremy could mow the lawn and I could water the plants I did plant (3 jalapa peppers (hoping they're like jalapeno), 1 bell pepper, 1 tomato), pick the ripe fruit (including from my strawberries), and look at some things my mom had to show me.  As Jeremy and I went to carry some things downstairs right before we left, I looked out to the garden and noticed all these little red orbs (which I'd somehow missed while I had been in the garden earlier) amongst the weeds (which have grown as tall as me, by the way...  We never tilled it this year, and we aren't doing a lot of maintaining...).  I said to Jeremy, "What do you think those little red balls are out there?  Flower bulbs?"  He said, "Well, let's go take a look; but they look like tomatoes to me."  And what do you know?  The ones I had let rot away last year went to seed all by themselves.  And in amongst all those weeds, several tomato plants grew; and a few of them even produced!  There were a couple of regular slicing tomatoes as well, but they are still green.  So how about that!  I hadn't even been watering them, and they'd grown!  So I've now been picking them and eating them snack-like.  They are very flavorful.  I like volunteers :).

This is the kitchen in the house Jeremy and I made an offer on on Saturday.  And the offer was accepted yesterday.  This is the older house I spoke of a few posts back that has the land we wanted and a great location.  This is the house that will require a heavy remodel.  But it has magnificent potential.  I took a ton of pictures, but I'm only posting one.  There is still the possibility it won't happen; and if that's the case, we will accept it as a closed door we aren't meant to walk through.  But we have prayed about this for a month.  We have pondered and researched.  And though it will be a lot of work...  We think it will be worth it.  We think we can make it what we want; and the property is already more than we were hoping for in the area we were looking.  So we are excited (though at times daunted).

So that's my quick update :).

Goal Update

Well, it’s a few days into April. And I do want to try to update my goal progress for the year quarterly this year. So here goes nothing ;).

Memorize 52 Scirpture Masteries: Well, it didn’t take me long to realize that I was kind of making a mountain out of this goal… Important? Yes. 52? Probably not the best choice. So I have cut that down to about 20. I’m all about being realistic. If you set too many unrealistic goals and then accomplish none, you get discouraged. It’s much better to be realistic and have the potential to reach it. So how am I doing on this one? Well, I memorized one new one :). It was part of Sharing Time and I helped the Primary kids learn Amos 3:7, which states: “Surely the Lord God will do nothing but He revealeth His secret unto His servants the prophets.” I do have others memorized, but they are ones I had memorized before. Like Moses 3:18. Or 1 Nephi 3:7. So I have some work to do to reach this goal. I probably should start…

Simplify: I don’t know if I’ve done this well or not. I kind of think I have, because – well, look at my wedding ;)! It doesn’t get much simpler than that! No stress of planning. I have felt mostly laid back lately. I haven’t begun working on cross-stitch ornaments. I probably should make a list of things that would help me to simplify. Things like planning meals – and even making meals ahead of time and freezing them. Although, Jeremy is a great help with dinner. Right now he is getting home before me, so he is willing (and able) to make our dinner :). Today he gets it easy, since I got it in the crock pot this morning and all he has to do is add the green peppers and make the brown rice. But yesterday he made our creamy chicken and biscuits from start to finish. But yeah, I am grateful I set this as a goal, because in Conference just this past weekend, President Monson asked us if, in this fast-paced world in which we live, we ever slow down enough to meditate and ponder on eternal truths. So I think I need to continue to ask myself that and work on making time to do so.

Visiting Teaching: Well, I’m starting out with what I hoped. It can be a challenge, and that’s mostly because I feel really awkward when I call up someone I don’t know and ask them if Wendy and I can visit with them. But I think, if I’m open and honest and just be myself, it won’t be so bad. So if I feel awkward, I can say I do. That’s keeping it real ;).

Eat More Vegetables: Woohoo! Well, I am doing okay on this. For one thing, Monday Meals has been going along pretty well (except the last 2 weeks, because things have been going on…). For another, I recently discovered that the way Jeremy enjoys his veggies is actually quite good! He shreds up several different types of vegetables and eats them with mayo. And okay, so I’m not a mayonnaise fan. But I can put salad dressing on them, and WOW! I was quite pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed them! So now, if I don’t have time to whip up some veggies to go with dinner (or I forget to tell Jeremy what page to look on in a cookbook to fix some veggies I had planned…), we can rely on the shredded veggies that are pretty much always on hand! So I think I’ve done better about eating veggies this year. And I think I will continue to do EVEN better!

Humility: This is hard to measure. And somehow I don’t know how humble it would be to say I am more humble ;). If I am… But the point for me is that I am working on trusting my Heavenly Father and His will for me. Though this may sound like it should be an easy thing to accomplish, it isn’t. At least not for me. Because sometimes I just don’t understand. I often reference my experience of moving here to Washington because I KNEW it was the right thing for me; and then winding up here pretty much jobless for the first 4 months and then working part-time jobs at low pay, living with my mom and grandmother (feeling like a moocher), and seeing no prospects of marriage… And that was for a really long time. And I’m not going to lie. That was a blow to my confidence in my decision to move here. It was even a blow to my faith. But I pushed forward, although reluctantly and sometimes begrudgingly (definitely not the best attitude…). And now I know and understand. Maybe not all of it. But a lot of it. Because I know now why I was told to come to Washington. I know now why I was kept where I was kept. I know it was so I could meet the wonderful man I would marry. It just took time for everything to be “right.” And so I am working on trusting. And trusting enough to move forward in faith when I know something is right – even if it doesn’t make sense at the time. And being humble enough to have confidence in that choice when things get hard, instead of becoming like a belligerent teenager and shaking my fist at the heavens… (I’ve totally done that on more than one occasion).

Bucket List Item: I’m going to go ahead and say I have already accomplished this. I did so on March 23. I married the right person at the right time in the right place for right now. And while it isn’t what I anticipated when I listed that as one of my bucket-list items, it is right. After all, as I’ve quoted to you before, “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” There will be another time and another place that will be right. It will be the time and place when we become a forever family. But it will still be with the same right person ;).

Three-Month Supply of Food Storage: Well, I am moving in this direction in different ways. One new way is being in the habit of replacing things as I use them. So if I make something that uses a can of cream of chicken, I immediately add that to my shopping list so I replenish the supply. This is a new thing for me. In the past, I would deplete the supply and then have to buy it when I needed it. So I never had a store of it. We are also doing really well with having plenty of white rice ;). And we now use nonfat dry milk exclusively, so we will keep a store of that. I’m liking having staples. And while our meals might not be exciting by any means, I’m pretty sure Jeremy and I could sustain life for 3 months on what we have in the house, if we needed to. Well, except for water… But I don’t think we will try to store 3 months of water… But we do need to try to store some water.

72-Hour Kits: Still not doing super-awesome on this. I’m not really sure why. Probably lack of focus. Sometimes life seems to be in such constant change that I think, “Well, I’ll do that when things settle down.” Well, what if things never settle down!?! Yeah, we should probably get on this…

Well, that was a short list! I need to keep these things in my focus a little better, I think.

In other news… Guess who is speaking in Sacrament on Easter Sunday? Yikes! I feel completely inadequate. So I will be praying a lot!

And you know what else? I’ve been missing Alabama lately… Wishing I was back there on vacation. Well, except for the whole 85-degree weather bit. I don’t miss (or want) that. Of course, I’m also ready to not miss (but have gone) this ridiculous cold weather up here. How about some 60s? I’m cool with that! Stop dipping into the 30s! It’s April for goodness sake!

Goal Setting Time

Well, it’s that time of year. The beginning of a new one. Time to examine how I did as far as accomplishing last year’s goals and time to set new ones. I have given a little bit of thought to my goals for 2012. But it’s time to actually really give it some thought as I sit here and meander through my thoughts of yore (a.k.a. yesterday ;)) and look to thoughts of tomorrow.

In 2011, I had hoped to:

Attend the Temple Monthly. Though I did not get 100% on this goal, I did get close. I made it 10 out of 12. There were times this was a big sacrifice to make – like the time my mom couldn’t go at the last minute, so I took my car. My car doesn’t run so well (as you may well recall). I mean, it’s running. But it has issues. I don’t usually (read: I don’t ever) take it on treks to Seattle… But Jeremy had just replaced the radiator, so I felt a bit more confident in it. And one nice thing that came from that trip was the opportunity to go with Jeremy’s mom and get to know her better and share that time and experience together. Though I didn’t officially meet this goal 100%, it will not be on my 2012 goals. And the reason is because I have achieved what I needed to achieve, and that was a change of heart. I’ve made Temple attendance a bigger priority in my life, and that’s the purpose of goals… at least for me. Or at least, it’s one purpose. I feel confident that I will continue making it a priority in 2012 whether it’s one of my official self-improvement goals or not.

Read the scriptures 30 minutes a day. This you will also not find on my 2012 goal list. Again, not because I am perfect at it. But because I have seen a change in myself. I didn’t achieve what I would call 100% on this goal either. But again, I have seen the scriptures become a more important part of my life. I have experienced more of those beautiful moments during scripture study where I have an impression about something important or learn something I can apply to my life from what I read. These are beautiful things to me, they were things I wanted to experience. And I have. And because I have, I want to continue it. It’s funny how that works… I think that’s some of what a change of heart is: you recognize the good fruits that come from good things, and in wanting those good fruits, you start to desire to do the good things. And so it is for me. I am not perfect – and sometimes my scripture reading is far less than 30 minutes and may consist of reading through one Conference talk from the most recent Conference. And maybe it’s one I’ve read through twice before (but I return to it because I love it). But the goal is to be spiritually fed through scripture reading – whether ancient or modern-day scripture – and I have felt that happen in my life, and I am thankful.

Continue building my savings account. I have continued to do this, and I will take it off my goal list for 2012. Not because I’m going to stop doing it, but because it’s become almost automatic. I remain amazed that I have been able to save what I’ve wanted to save and yet meet all my obligations. I wish I could explain what I feel about this, but I lack words. Basically, I have learned (or reaffirmed) two things: 1 – Paying tithing really does result in blessings being poured out abundantly. The promise is in Malachi. The promise is true. Money didn’t fall from the sky. But I had what I needed – and then some. 2 – Following the counsel of the Prophet and apostles, after receiving your own witness it is good, also brings forth blessings. We have been counseled to get out of debt and stay out of debt. To not be a prisoner to anyone through financial obligations. Sure, there are certain big-ticket items that require debt. A home mortgage is what most readily comes to mind. But so few material things are really debt-worthy, and I am thankful I have been able to maintain a desire to be debt-free more than I have had a desire for a new car or a big TV or whatever. The other counsel has been to save money away for the rainy days. I have continued to do so. Initially it was hard to put that little bit aside, because I wasn’t making very much. I’m still not. But I have seen the miracle of being able to do it, because I want to do what’s right. I want to be self-reliant as much as I possibly can. And I know Heavenly Father wants that for me also, so He will help me, as long as I do my part. I have seen it. So I know it’s true.

See somewhere new. Okay, so I didn’t do this. But does it count if I took someone else to see some place new ;)? Haha… And actually, while I’m sitting here thinking about it, I did see somewhere new this year. I went to Whidby Island (I think that’s how it’s spelled). I think I don’t always think of things like that because it’s not as exotic as Paris or Egypt or the Oregon Coast (haha ;)). But it was someplace I’d never been, so I think it counts :). Which means I can say I did this after all! And with these thoughts in mind, I think I will remove this from my goals also, because it seems a little too vague. I could go to upper-Shelton and say I’ve seen somewhere new. But that’s not really what I intend, so I think this goal is kinda dorky, now that I think of it :).

Complete one item on my bucket list. I didn’t do this, but that’s okay. I will add it on for next year. And by golly! It’s going to happen one of these years ;). I have a variety of things on there, you know. And there’s a good chance I could make up for the lean years by having a fat year and doing 3 of them in one year! You never can tell with life. It’s always an exciting adventure :).

72-Hour Kit. Um… Still no. Arg. But I think I had to get some other things prioritized ahead of this so that I could get to this point. See the remainder of my commentary in my goals for 2012.

3-month supply food storage. Well, officially I didn’t do so well on this. But it’s still important to me, which is why you will see it listed under the 2012 goals with a few tweaks.

Become organized and stay that way. Well, I am working on this. I’m not there. Not even close. But I’m working on it. I think I shredded an entire trash bag full of personal documents that just needed to go! I did that this past week. As I have gotten more and more settled into my new home (yeah, you’d think I’d be completely settled, but I’m not quite there…), I have improved in how organized I can be. I have been de-cluttering by getting rid of things I really don’t need (like novels I’ll never read again – or may never read in the first place). I’m not saying I don’t want to have stuff, but I am realizing that the more you have the more you have to organize. So I don’t need to have the cross-stitch books that I’ll never use – and I know I’ll never use, because I don’t see myself cross-stitching a bunch of bass or catfish. (I will add a disclaimer: I still am not ready to part with any kitchen stuff :)).

Lose 8 more pounds. I did this and then some. When I went for my very exciting female appointment in November, I discovered I’d lost 25 pounds from the year before. And when I’d weighed in 2010, I was already about 6 pounds down from where I’d started. Which means I lost a total of 31 pounds from 2010 to 2012. I’m not sure where I am today, since I don’t have a scale here. I know I’m under my goal weight, but I also know I’ve eaten a lot of pumpkin pie and cookies, and a few spoonfuls of ruined fudge and probably a handful of other not-so-waistline-friendly foods ;). But I’m not too worried about it.

Expand my garden. I did this. I grew a lot more stuff. I didn’t tend to it as much this year. There were several reasons for this. One large reason was time. My time was focused elsewhere, and that’s okay. I enjoyed my garden; I enjoyed the vegetables from it. I love to garden, but I don’t know if I will this year, simply because I don’t know if it’s realistic. If I do, it will be a few pots outside with maybe a tomato plant and I don’t know what else you can grow well in a pot. I don’t have much of a yard at my house, and I simply don’t see me going to my grandmother’s house every day or even every weekend to tend it. But I do know I will garden again one day, and I know I will enjoy it :).

Write in my journal weekly. I mostly did this. It got a little less frequent around October and November and December. But I still wrote a lot more than last year or the year before that. And I’m thankful. I know that it will be a treasure down the road. I have often spoken of how I appreciate now my high school journals (even though they are full of silly crushes and mundane details like that more than anything of real depth). But after I moved in to my own house, I unpacked my journal from Tuscaloosa. And I was so grateful for it. And wish I’d have written more. I had forgotten some very important things that happened in Tuscaloosa. Some huge blessings; some moments when I really saw the hand of the Lord in my day-to-day. I am – and will forever be – so grateful that I wrote what I wrote, even if it wasn’t more. Going back and reading that journal was so strengthening to me. And a further witness of the importance of writing in a journal. And so I’m grateful for what I’ve written this year. I can definitely say it’s run the gamut of emotions. It is a good representation of my life this year. And there’s even a smattering of impressions and thoughts that I know will be a blessing for me to read about in the future and remember.

Write 30 minutes a day. Yeah, I sort of quit doing this sometime around April. I never got back to it. Maybe one day. For now it’s not that big a deal. Although it would help me with one of those bucket list items ;).

Spend more time reading and less time online. Well, I can say I have been online less in the last few months. Because I didn’t have the option, what with not being willing to have that bill at this point ;). But I haven’t done a whole heap of reading, that’s for sure! I had planned to read 30 books this year, but I only got halfway to my goal. But that’s okay. I was enjoying the company of a certain special someone… and it was worth it ;).

In 2012 I hope to:

Memorize about 52 Scripture Masteries. That’s a rough estimate, and I hesitate to put a numerical value there, because that makes it harder to be accountable to when some of those are entire pages long (and therefore it will not get memorized in only one week). Anyway, scripture masteries are select scriptures from each of the books of scripture we have (Old Testament, New Testament, Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, Pearl of Great Price). The 10 Commandments are a scripture mastery in the Old Testament. And they are multiple verses, so you can see what I mean about the length of some of them. Anyway, Jeremy and I talked about wanting to memorize them, and actually we are setting this as a couple goal for the year also. But I know I want to add it to my personal goals to help me be more accountable to it :).

Simplify. I definitely realized, when shopping at 6:30 in the morning on December 23rd, and feeling quite Grinch-like, that I need to simplify life a bit. Last year I had shopped throughout the year for Christmas, and it wasn’t so hectic. This year I didn’t do so well, and my attitude was a lot more yuck when I was down to the wire. So not the Christmas spirit. And I love to give gifts. It’s a way I show love. But I think, as the number of people I want to give gifts to continues to grow in size, my choice of gifts needs to change as well. Gifts can be expensive, and I need to be a wise steward over my money. I think this year I will be turning to making gifts more than buying them. Does this sound less simple to some? Perhaps. But it gives me an opportunity to work on it through the year and actually put even more love and thought into the gift. I miss making cross-stitch ornaments. And one of the things I have enjoyed doing every year since I moved here is making goodies and giving them away. And another gift I really enjoyed giving this year was the pepper jelly I made. There was just something extra-enjoyable in the home-made gifts, and I think I want to do that in 2012 instead of going to the store at the crack of dawn (or before…) and being sour about it. Blah. And this is only one example of my need to simply my life. It’s the main one I have thought of so far, but I am sure there are other ways. And so the goal is to determine them and do them :).

Visiting Teaching. So at church, ideally, each sister in the Ward is assigned another sister in the Ward as her “companion” and then they get a list of other sisters in the Ward to visit each month. The goal is to fellowship, teach, lift, help, etc. And let me go ahead and admit here that I’m pretty lousy at it. Like. Really. Lousy. I haven’t always been lousy, but that’s because I’ve had really awesome Visiting Teaching companions in the past (read: Jeni) who would make the appointments and all I had to do was tag along. So I guess I was, in fact, sort of lousy. But I didn’t feel quite as lousy, because I was actually doing something. I’m not so great at being the one to initiate things and coordinate schedules and call the sisters and see if we can come by and visit. Lame of me, I know. And so I need to do better. My official goal is to do face-to-face visits 4 times this year, if possible. I say “if possible” because the truth is there are others involved. If someone says, “Yeah, this isn’t a good time for me, could you send a letter instead?” then I can’t really twist their arm, ya know? But I need to put forth my efforts better than I have. And l will admit I am hesitant to put this up here as a goal, because I know it means I will have to be accountable to it. But I also know I have been richly blessed, and this is something I believe Heavenly Father wants me to do. It is His way of helping others feel loved and supported. And I need to be more willing to do those things. And as I do, I think I will gain a testimony of Visiting Teaching the way Jeni has (which is probably why she was undaunted in her scheduling appointments and doing the work… she’d seen it bless the life of at least one person, and she knew). Thank you Jeni, for being an example to me :).

Eat more vegetables. Okay, I’m mostly a terrible vegetable-eater. Which is part of why Monday Meals was so awesome… we tried new recipes with vegetables that are ordinarily thought of as detestable (like Brussels sprouts and asparagus). Granted, those vegetables were doctored up with everything unhealthy under the sun (like cheese, creamy soups, and sour cream…). But I liked my vegetables during Monday Meals ;). But all kidding aside, I do know I need to make vegetables a bigger part of my diet. When I’m cooking an actual meal, for dinner, it’s easy for me to make sure it’s well-rounded and includes veggies. And there are even some vegetarian dishes I love (like the garlic vegetable soup). But on a daily basis, I do not make eating vegetables a priority. I have gotten better about having more fruit in my house (usually bananas because they are easy, and lately I’ve developed a love for those little cutie organs – or mandarins, apparently ;)). I like easy, which is probably why these two fruits are playing a large part in my fruit diet lately. But veggies… I just don’t think to snack on veggies. And I should. Even if I require some ranch dressing to help dress them up a bit and make them more appealing :). I’m really good at eating pickles… does that count? Anyway, I am not sure how I am going to implement this, exactly, but that’s sort of what setting a goal is for me… I decide on something I feel I need to do better, and then I work to find a way to do it. Even if it takes me all year ;). So I’ll let you know what I come up with.

Humility. So I had this as a goal in 2010. I felt I didn’t achieve it. I didn’t put it on the list for 2011. Mostly because I was probably pretty moody about my absolute failure (or seeming failure) and didn’t really want to go there again. But I’ve gained perspective. And, honestly, I am not sure how one measures humility in oneself anyway. But I want to at least work on it, whether or not I can say I achieved it by the end of the year. (Well, I don’t think I will achieve it in this life anyway, so just nix that ridiculous statement…). I have come to realize some interesting things about humility and pride. I remember when I set this goal in 2010, my cousin Elka told me to be careful asking for that. Hahaha… So true Elka, so true. Because the things that happen to allow you to choose humility are generally not the most fun things in the world. But let me go ahead and say that, even though I didn’t set that as a goal in 2011, I still had ample opportunity come my way to exercise humility. Do I think I did a good job? I don’t know. But I hope I did at least some of the time. And I have seen where the opportunities have been (in retrospect, and with a little bit of pondering and probably some encouraging impressions from the Spirit). And I don’t think I’ve been an all-out failure. But I think one way I can improve is by realizing something is an opportunity to be humble during the event rather than afterward. Haha… I’m also learning that, sometimes, humility doesn’t have to be in the big things (like me saying, “Okay so I moved across an entire country and did my best to do my best – so what gives!?!” – when I don’t get a good job or meet my awesome future husband in the first 2.5 years of being in Washington). Yep, I probably was lame at humility in that scenario. Humility is trusting the Lord – and trusting His timing. And not asking “what gives!?!” But it’s also in the small, seemingly unimportant things. Like saying, “Yeah, those books made me laugh, but it’s time for me to stop excusing them as my guilty pleasure because they do have quite a bit of inappropriate stuff in them, and I don’t need them to be happy or be better.” So anyway, I don’t know how I will measure this, but I do want to be willing to at least try to be more humble. In the big things and the small things. I want to say, “Thy will be done” and mean it. Because it’s always what’s best anyway.

Bucket List item. I didn’t achieve this last year, so I would like to this year. The sad thing is that there are plenty of things I can at least work toward without it costing money. Like learning sign language. Okay, maybe that’s not plenty (I don’t have the list handy at the moment, and I don’t have internet here at home, so I’m going on memory for most of this stuff…). So this year I will try again. But like I said when I acknowledged that I didn’t complete this goal for 2011: life is life. And I may very well cross off several things in one year! So I am not too worried about it. I’d just like to have it as a goal :).

Three-month supply food storage and hygiene necessities. Well, 3 months in most things. Some things may be 2 months. Why not more? Well, because my little tiny house isn’t conducive to more. But we will store what we can and I will learn how to circulate it and replace it. It will be good practice for one day when we have the room we need and we can have a year’s supply. I will be able to rotate and get a good feel for how much I will need of things. I’m pretty excited about this, because I actually have a starting point.

72-Hour Kits. I’m feeling like this might actually be the year! Perhaps because I’m feeling warm and fuzzy as I sit here on my couch in my pj’s (church is at 1:00 this year for my Ward), and I’m feeling hopeful and excited for all I can do in 2012. And possibly because I have a pretty darn good support system in things like this (I like to call him Jeremy ;)).

Well, that’s about all I’ve come up with to this point. Not as many as in the past, but then, I am trying to simplify ;). So Happy New Year all! And to let you smile just a little bit more… Here’s a picture of me and Jeremy and my Christmas tree on the last day of 2011, right before we took it down and recycled it :). Awwww…

Where [I'm] At

Oh goody! A song title post. There's a blast from my past.

Well, seeing as we are just about through with September, I figure now is a good time to update the blogosphere with my 2011 goals. I will also give you a run-down of the information promised in last week’s post. I will start with that :).

It is official – the Alabama trip, that is. November 18 through November 25. And a good time will be had by all, I’m sure :).

The apartment thing… Still looking. I went and looked at the one I mentioned last week. Let’s just say life is always an adventure. For one thing, I showed up and nobody was there to meet me. Except another couple showed up who were going to be viewing the apartment at the same time -- which was a little awkward. And then the guy who was going to show it finally called and said he was sorry, that he’d gone to the wrong apartment! Well, that didn’t instill much confidence, quite frankly. Add to that the fact that the apartment needed more than just carpets replaced (which they were going to do) and that there were only 2 parking spaces for 8 apartments (yeah, you do the math…) – and it being in downtown, I’d probably have had to pay for parking (ummm…. No thanks)… Yeah, I didn’t get the warm fuzzies from that place. But that’s okay. We try again. I already have the next place picked out that I want to look into. It’s cute – a little tiny house. I emailed the company who rents it and heard back that it’s still available. Now to see if I can schedule a time. We shall see. But again, I know it’ll happen when it’s right. Until then, I just try. And really, it’s kind of fun to sit back and imagine all the excitement of my own place (and imagining it in the different places I’m looking at). And since a lot of my stuff has been in boxes for at least 3 years (and some of it as long as 5), it’s going to be like a treasure chest when I do finally have a place and start unpacking! I’m picturing all my cool kitchen gadgets now… :). Yep, that’s one of my weaknesses: kitchen stuff.

Oh, and I made my friend Donna’s pepper jelly. This stuff is awesome, though mine doesn’t pack such a punch (I think my garden jalapenos – those I used 30 of those suckers – weren’t quite hot enough…). Also I will cut back on the sugar next time, because it’s sweeter than I remember hers being. But then again, maybe this has to do with the lacking hotness?

Saturday my mom, Jeremy, and I went to a church Service Project in which we beautified our city by cleaning up sidewalks, etc. The weather has turned chilly, so afterward, when Jeremy and I went out to Applebee’s and to the waterfront to walk around, I made sure to have a sweater :). Yep, Fall will be here soon… It’s in the air.

Okay, so that about catches you up on that sort of stuff. The daily goings-on of the Nilla Life. But as I said, I need to keep tabs on my progress with the goals I set for 2011. Hold myself accountable and all that.

1. Attend the Temple monthly. I’ve been doing well with this goal. I did miss 2 months in the first part of the year, but those are still the only 2 months I’ve missed. So 7 out of 9. It’s been good to do this. I usually go with my mom, and we have enjoyed the time together. We usually eat together, either before or after. It’s just nice.

2. Read scriptures for 30 minutes each day. I can say I have improved hugely in this category since my 4-month update. Mostly this is because I decided that my lunch hour is a good time to focus on reading my scriptures. This way I make sure I make them a priority and do it before the end of the day when life gets hectic. And let me say that I have gotten so much more out of the scriptures since reorganizing my priorities. I followed more, I was able to apply more things to my life… And since the Stake President had challenged us in February to read the Book of Mormon before the next Stake Conference (which was a couple weeks ago), I had decided to work toward that goal, and I was able to accomplish it! Mostly due to the fact that I had decided to read during my lunch break. So that has been a blessing all around. I will still give myself an 85% on it, though. Because I don’t have as much self-discipline on Friday through Sunday sometimes, and reporting here is all about being honest. So there is still room for improvement, but I am glad to say I have definitely improved to this point :).

3. Write in my journal weekly. I have pretty much done this consistently. There might be one week since my last update in which I didn’t. But I only missed it by a day or two. I know I will be so grateful in the years ahead that I set this goal and followed through with it. Actually, I already am. I already go back and read stuff from earlier this year. See how things have changed, etc. It’s a good thing to keep a journal. Life happens so fast, and if we don’t record it, we are liable to forget some good stuff – and some significant moments.

4. Write 30 minutes a day. Yeah, not so much. That fell by the wayside when I gave up my room and got an almost-full-time job and etc. etc. etc. One day I’ll get back to it, though. Possibly not in 2011, though ;).

5. Continue adding to my savings account. Yep, been doing this faithfully. I’m glad too :). It is amazing how following the counsel of church leaders can be such a blessing. I don’t pull in a lot of money by any means, but the fact that I’ve continued to put money into savings, even if it wasn’t very much, and also the fact that I’ve been out of debt for over a year now have led to me feeling financially sound and ready to be able to move out on my own. I’m thankful.

6. Become organized and stay that way. Oy. Not doing so well on this one either. Actually, I am hopeful that, if I do eventually get a place of my own, this will be helped significantly simply by the fact that I’ll have a place to put stuff… Until then, I just need to still work toward the goal, even if it’s in small ways.

7. Achieve at least one of my “bucket list” items. Well, I haven’t so far. I suppose something could change in 3.5 months and I will manage to pull this off. But, then again, maybe I won’t. At least not this year. But hey… There’s always next year ;).

8. See a new place. Well, I’m doubtful that I will accomplish this one either, truthfully. Between starting a new job (and therefore not having leave time to use for 6 months) and choosing to spend money to go to Alabama in November rather than some exotic locale (and believe me, Alabama is probably the better option anyway ;)), this kind of took a back-seat. But again, there’s always next year :).

9. Lose about 8 more pounds. I think I reported in May that I had accomplished this goal and surpassed it. And I have continued to maintain where I was in May, so I’m happy with that.

10. 72 Hour Kits. Blech. So important. So not accomplished. I think I probably need to accomplish #6 and that will help me with this goal.

11. 3 to 6 months food storage. Again, I’ve seen little forward motion with this. I have been given some great ideas to help me on my way. I just need to get around to implementing them! And again, I think #6 will help here. (As will having a place to call my own…).

12. Expand my garden. Yep, I did this :). I still grew a ton of tomatoes (and now they are ripening and I have tomatoes of various sizes and types coming out my ears!) but I also grew jalapenos (which were not hot, as I mentioned above…), bell peppers, zucchini (and found a couple of ways to use it that I really like! Plus a recipe my mom went nuts over and made again the other night…), acorn squash, cucumbers, pumpkin, lettuce, chives, and cilantro – in addition to the strawberries that were already in place. Yep, I grew new stuff and got something out of all of it, so that makes me happy :). (See pictures at beginning of post. I was too lazy to move stuff around.)

13. Spend less time online and more time reading. This is a toss-up. I haven’t spent as much time online most days, simply because I’m at work. But by that same token, I also haven’t spent as much time pleasure reading as I would like. And so I don’t know how to grade myself on this. Maybe a C. Because I still turn on the computer and check email before I pick up my reading book…

Yep, so that’s it. Now you know :). And just for the sake of getting maybe 20 minutes of reading time in, I’m leaving it at that :).
